5 way race

Attorney Sean Conway is seeking to succeed Howard Finkelstein in 2020, joining Gordon Weekes, Ruby Green, Jim Lewis, and Tom Lynch, whose filing is found here.

From an email from Sean this morning:

“I am filing this week to become Broward’s next Public Defender!

In memory of my father, Jack Conway, an Irish citizen, who had always encouraged me to run some day, I had planned to announce it this St. Patrick’s Day.  It is something I have been planning to do for a very long time.  I really liked working for Al Schreiber, back when you and I were trial partners there.  It genuinely felt like a place where people enjoyed coming to work.

Here are a few ideas I want to talk to the voters about:

*I see no reason why every attorney who receives a taxpayer salary should not have a case load – even the elected PD.  Having ran my own private practice for the past 14 years, I see no reason why a lawyer cannot both supervise and represent people;

*Why does a taxpayer-funded agency call up every newly arrested inmate to ask if they need a lawyer?  I would make sure each jail has a free line to call the PD’s office & the office would also monitor all inmates to see if they are in there without any charges having been filed, or if they are being held without bond.  But the private defense Bar and bailbond agencies used to handle that quite efficiently, and I see no reason to go in and solicit additional criminal defense work on behalf of the taxpayers.

* Also, I would work with the new Sheriff to get that Jail-Video link Mr. Schreiber had established back up & running again.  Not only did that Jail-Video link save time for the attorneys, but also less work for the BSO corrections deputies;

* I would explore the idea of all attorneys being permitted to do limited, outside legal work (non-criminal), with certain policies in place;

*Lastly, if I am chosen by the voters, nobody at the PD office loses their job just because I am elected.  Everyone starts with a clean slate.  Even if you openly support other candidates – all I am asking for is your vote.  I have seen the tragedy which befalls other offices around the State when there is a change in administration.  It is not fair to the clients, for one thing – but also people should be able to express their political opinions without fear of repercussions … “

In response to the question why public defenders contact inmates, public defenders are empowered with this authority by statute.

27.59 Access to prisoners.—The public defenders, assistant public defenders, criminal conflict and civil regional counsel, and assistant regional counsel shall be empowered to inquire of all persons who are incarcerated in lieu of bond and to tender them advice and counsel at any time, but the provisions of this section shall not apply with respect to persons who have engaged private counsel.

I got my divorce decree sealed from nosey prying eyes because I was a Broward Judge and my little peep installed on the bench before I left. Now I want to be your next Public Defender. I never get enough.

Yes, Gary, that is just the basic statute all PDs know about – thanks.

The question wasn’t ‘why are PDs going into the jail’ – rather, it seems to be ‘why are they calling up EVERY inmate?’

And the so called Representation they receive? Its all about the numbers so more money can be spent on supervisors who dont pull their weight and a management that needs a major overhaul.
Didn’t like any of the contestants for PD until now. I’ll cast my vote with somebody like Sean Conway who knows what he’s doing as opposed to a bunch of bureaucratic bumblers without any cases any day.

Can’t wait to hear Lynch try to weasel out of why he sentenced blacks twice as bad as whites “blame the SAO, not me – I’m colorblind”

This is from a recent newspaper article:

“Recently retired Judge Thomas M. Lynch IV is one example.

The registered Democrat was one of the youngest judges in the state when elected to the county bench at 33 in 1984.

Since 2004, Lynch handed down an average sentence of 155 days to white defendants across third-degree felonies, an analysis of OBTS data collected by county clerks shows.

He gave blacks more than double the time.”

Or, there will be one candidate left, and the other four will be the new well-paid Chiefs of Administration.

They’re empty baggage when Finkelstein leaves except two that need a few more years until they max out.
They’ll be looking for new jobs.

    Who has administrative experience?

    Weekes, that’s who.

Who has handled large budgets before?

    Weekes, that’s who.

Who has managed a large group of lawyers before?

    Weekes, that’s who.

Gordon Weekes is the choice with experience.

    1. 21

      2

It sure ain’t trial experience. Being a butt kisser has a multitude of drawbacks. The PDs office needs a good clean out from the top down. Just ask any of us who work there.

    2. 12

Who couldn’t find the inside of a courtroom with both hands and a GPS monitor???Gordon weeks that’s who.
Who has collected that big PD administration salary and done absolutely nothing???Gordon Weeks that’s who.

Who has done nothing but suck Howards ass for his entire tenure as a PD?? Gordon Weeks that’s who.

Who is the most unqualified candidate of the current lot???Gordon Weeks that’s who.

Who could give 2 shits about the indigent men and women they represent??Gordon weeks that’s who, and he learned this disrespect from the biggest moron to have ever held public office, that lying hypocrite little man Howie.

        This.

Who will maintain the status quo? Gordon. That’s who.

The people in that office are miserable. Admin thinks that by throwing them raises they will buy their loyalty. Funny, when Cathy was there, there was no money. Now gordo is running, people hate HF and anything to do with him, and raises magically appear. Dont be fooled people. Anything is better than him. Anything.

One thing about Ruby Green , when she walks through the hall it’s not like she’s too good to acknowledge anyone. The rest of the group appear as if they wouldn’t spit on you if you were on fire .

    1. 4

      7

Way over her head. Can you imagine Ruby Green trying to grasp budget issues, who pays for what? Nooo. Or deal with the other elected PD’s? A slaughter. Or understand FTE’s? She doesn’t have the capacity. BUT, her wigs are great fun!

      1. 13

        2

The way Weekes runs from work, I can’t imagine him running the PD’s Office either.

      2. 4

        1

Ha. Like Renee gets budget issues? Please. Just surround yourself with competency and you got this Ruby G.

    2. 10

      1

Not true! Jim Lewis is non-judgmental, friendly, and puts out fires on a regular basis. He’s a real trial lawyer.

The PD’s needs someone who can try a case with eyes closed and wake up the next morning and do it again.

Jim Lewis for public defender. The only real trial lawyer that’s running.

  6. 17

    4

Sean Conway would be a great boss, if that’s what you’re looking for in an elected public defender. He’d be really positive for private attorneys, if that’s what you’re looking for in an elected public defender. He has a real concern for how hard the BSO detention deputies will have to work, if that’s what you’re looking for in an elected public defender. Priorities, Sean, priorities.

    1. 3

      3

Yes can we please have a a PD whose focus will be on the comfort of deputies and law enforcement.

      1. 17

        1

We pled Cruz guilty at an arraignment.
While vouching for his mental health.
What else could we have possibly done to further the case?
We laid out the the whole case in 4 minutes.
We could have had sentencing done at the hearing too, but the judge may not have gone for it.

      2. 6

        2

I read one thing which said bringing back Schreiber’s jail video link would “save attorneys time, but also create less work for the corrections deputies.”

As a PD, I hate having to drive out there for some piece of information – be better if I could just call the inmate up and ask him! That it also assists with another taxpayer-funded agency just happens to be a side benefit of getting that video link back up ..so many haters.

    2. 1

      1

Hey “priorities” – yes, how the video link will create a little less work on the BSO was the primary focus of his plan?!

That was Schreiber who set up that video link – so you’re saying the Boss Man was solely focused on deputy comfort?!

    3. 9

Maybe I’ll run for PD. I like my chances against blacks and losers with irish names. This time Holness promises to deliver the win.

SFC LAMPOON Broward County Clerk of the Court Losing It

    Dictionary result for lampoon:

    Verb
Publicly criticize (someone or something) by using ridicule, irony, or sarcasm.

First Amendment considerations arise when you are openly recording the activities of police officers (or other public officials) carrying out their duties in public places.

A number of U.S. Courts of Appeals have held that, in such circumstances, the First Amendment protects the right to record audio and video regardless of whether the police/officials consent. This constitutional right would override any state or federal laws that would otherwise prohibit such recording.

Currently, the following U.S. Courts of Appeals have recognized the First Amendment right to record the police and/or other public officials:

Eleventh Circuit (with jurisdiction over Alabama, Florida and Georgia): see Smith v. City of Cumming, 212 F.3d 1332, 1333 (11th Cir. 2000) (“The First Amendment protects the right to gather information about what public officials do on public property, and specifically, a right to record matters of public interest.”).

Broward’s political hypes run for any office in attempts to get their noses in the public trough. Then unlike its judges who cant seem to help falling off the wagon, they stick around as long as the slop holds out.

  16. 19

    1

I hear Ruby said no to a hypothetical “deal” offered by a local political consultant to get back with Team Gordon. This took great courage, especially for a single mom making ends meet.

    Fight on Ruby.

    1. 13

They dont want anyone even remotely connected to Finkelstein and his pompous bs. Gordon and Ruby should be lookin for employment after they lose.

If Weekes fouls up on this one, he probably wont be playing the violin anytime soon again. He doesnt even have the support of his own office, let alone the condo vote as its being split big time among the other contenders. Howie as a lame duck cant pull it thru for his handpicked boy. Good thing. Weekes is a horrible administrator like the rest of the do nothing supervisors. The blowback is gonna land it in somebody else’s lap.

  18. 17

Give the supervisors a case load just they do at the SAO. They get the pay but are not ever in court.

Gordon Weekes needs to start packing up his office NOW because that LZY LOSER will be the first slug fired. Saranell Murphy is a REAL attorney and will show these wannabee attorneys how to do things the right way.

  21. 22

Howard has left the office in ashes. U think he cares? Gordon doesnt have the energy or the know how to put it back together. Political payback has only started. Howard’s memory will be totally erased.

NOBODY WANTS HOWIE’S PET BOY FOR PD

  29. 19

    3

Hey Gordo, you just can’t get past all of the nasty lies you have told about people over the years, can you? Catching up to you, right? How about all the times you backstabbed your colleagues just to get your lips closer to Howie’s ass? Paying the price now, huh? Is nobody giving Gordo the love anymore? We all just love the slow strut through the hallways with the blank stare on your face. It is so endearing. Time to step aside you pathetic poser wannabe. A new wave is coming and you are on the outside looking in! Send out job apps as soon as possible. You will not be missed… by anyone… promise.

    1. 9

      1

Gordon can go to one of those civil firms he referred kids to over the years. Yes Gordo, we known about that. I hear there are lots of video depos of kids and their families getting busted making false claims and pleading ignorance how they got hooked up with a civil firm in DC right after your visits. We know Gordon.

      1. 4

        0

Once you’re a gov gopher, civil firms wont touch you with a ten foot pole. We want more than a part time paper pusher with local political aspirations and little else.

  30. 18

    1

Gordo’s been skating for years and doing next to nothing like a lot of the other supervisors in the PD office. Howie thought he’d look all magnanimous and everything trying to promote Gordo to be his his hand picked successor leaving a messed up office to a minority. All that is okay. But Gordo’s done nothing to earn it. That’s one of the reasons so many people have filed to run against him. That and he’s a dimwit and they want to clean up the mess the PDs office has become with a bunch of supervisors informing on the rest of us that actually do the work from the trenches. Thats the reason Gordo doesnt have much support from the office. Being Howie’s pimp has a lot of drawbacks that he’s just now finding out about and having to deal with. Its also the reason Gordo wont win. Its not like this is much of a well kept secret. Gordo is just hoping he can minimize the fallout. He’s not doing a very good job at that either.

  31. 13

Hanging on Judy Stern’s hip at every event is not helping you. Give Bruce Roberts a call at the retirement home and ask him how Judy being out front on his campaign worked out for him.

    1. 16

      0

Lynch was known for sentencing blacks twice as harsh as whites.
He should just be enjoying his retirement.

  32. 16

    0

Its good to see Worthless Weekes wont be on the receiving end of Howie’s handout for Public Defender. The only thing hes ever done is live up to his name of “Worthless Weekes”.

  33. 12

    2

Finkelstein is at the wrong end of the stick on this one. His little pimp will lose. Weekes has little experience outside brown nosing and playing inter office politics like the rest of the supervisors who have handled few cases over the years and know even less about running the Public Defender’s Office.

    1. 11

      0

Gordo is finished. He should apply for a position at the OCCRC – they take anyone with a pulse and the office is filled with worthless election wannabees like Heise and Donohoe. No one there has any skill and none of them work a full day. Perfect for Gordo.

      He’s got heart.
And he knows that “a judge”, is not “The Court”.
How many greats stopped being great, because of bias judges, who attempt to merge the truth seeking functions into a constructed contempt?
We all lose when good lawyers are bullied.
      And it happens daily.

Judges think they are correct, because most don’t have the balls to educate the judges, which is a primary part of any legal argument. I like the judge, but this time he put the royals before the public.
If I were the PD on that case, I’d jump on him like a gazelle, and likely get disbarred.

Run for PD Dale. Very few understand what the greats do.

The word around the courthouse is the the bailiffs will all soon be replaced by real deputies in all of the courtrooms. Its certainly time for the poor old lazy do nothing bailiffs to just go away and never be seen or heard from again. And good riddance, way long over due. Bye bye old Geezer’s.

It cant happen soon enough. Its like a carnival in most of the Criminal Divisions. The bailiffs make it even worse with their antics. Where did they find these old freaks?

Of course the old geezer bailiff’s get a pension. Most of them are already getting a pension, social security and money from bso for sleeping in courtroom’s and looking for free food all of the time. They are just hanging out and socializing and getting paid for doing nothing all day. They are a total embarrassment. Hopefully they will all very soon be gone and good riddance.

Every time that I’m in the courthouse I always see the sheriffs bailiffs wandering around the halls aimlessly looking for a free meal somewhere in the courthouse They are like a bunch of idiots that have no money to pay for food, like a bunch of greedy mooches. The sooner these useless bunch of freeloading Geezer’s are gone the better. And they all think that they are he men studs. They can’t even walk fast enough to get out of everyone’s way much less their own way. Great courtroom security, NOT.

Just saw Brenda at lunch with a bunch of accolades talking about how they’re going to pull it off in 2020 to save all of their jobs ! She was at the next table over. She looked and sounded as if she had been smacked with an ugly stick. Maybe she should have treated Howard with a little more sympathy. The Clerk’s office is a total mess under her admin. I can just imagine how much worse its going to get with her and her twit employees out campaigning on company time now.

If Brenda was smart she would talk about how she was a mere secretary in the office until Howard sexually harassed and coerced her to dating him to keep her job. Everyone is mad at her now beause she fillped the script and stole the office from Howard and his other girl Iris Siple

Message to the new Sheriff. Please, please replace the useless, unprofessional, rude and lazy bailiffs with sworn deputies as soon as possible. The bailiffs are a complete joke and are a bunch of mooches always looking for handouts and collecting money for something or other. Please get rid of this group of geriatric bunch of hall walkers. It would be a huge improvement for security in the courthouse and the courtroom’s where we have to work everyday with these incompetent wannabee cop idiots.

CANT FIGURE OUT WHO WOULD BE WORSE AS CLERK OF COURTS
HOWARD WAS BAD ENOUGH ALL THOSE YEARS STUMBLING AROUND
BRENDA HAS TURNED IT INTO A CLOWN HOUSE
AND NOW AFTER A NASTY DIVORCE THEY ARE RUNNING AGAINST EACH OTHER ?
WHY CANT WE GET SOMEBODY WHO CAN TAKE THE CLERK’S OFFICE INTO THE 21ST CENTURY LIKE IN OTHER CIRCUITS ?
WHY MUST BROWARD CONTINUE TO HAVE A CLERK’S OFFICE RUN BY MORONS ?
WHY MUST EVERY ELECTED OFFICE IN BROWARD BECOME A CLUSTER F ?

I don’t understand Democrat politicians. They give lip service to everyone being equal and not seeing color, but then every comment on the PD race focuses on age or race. Even worse, you have elected officials making moronic statements like:
“In light of so much going on in politics today, I think it’s ironic that sometimes the answer is, you do need an old white guy,” Finkelstein said.“

      FINKELSTEIN IS A FOOL
WEEKES IS JUST A LAZY PIMP
SOON BOTH OF THEM WILL BE FORGOTTEN AND THE PDS OFFICE WILL BE REPAIRED

Finkelstein is one of the most moronic hypocrites imaginable when it comes to standing on a soapbox in hopes of adding a little height to his otherwise sound bite responses. Like anyone is still listening to his self serving bs. Nobody is listening and nobody cares what hes got to say. Just another political baboon barking hot air while professing to be disinterested in Broward politics. It’s disingenuous like so much of his rhetoric.
His boy Gordon looks like he’s going to lose so now Lit’l Howie can bark about how he was right about his racist comments although for all the wrong reasons. Nobody wants anybody sitting as public defender that had any connection to Howie and his sad tag team of incompetent yes punks.

Is it true that Saranell Murphy is running for public defender ? I would absolutely HIT THAT !!!

All those running but Gordo want to clean up the PDs office. Its no secret that it needs competent leadership.

Great news! With Howie’s retirement in 2020, it was just announced that there would also be a replacement for him on Channel 7. Beginning in November of 2020, “Can’t Help Me Gordo” will appear starring Gordon Weekes. Each exciting week a person with a small problem will call Gordo, tell him their problem, and he will immediately get a blank stare on his face and turn their little problem into a really big problem. He has a lot of experience at that type of programming at the PD office and he is sure to be a success on television. Congratulations Gordo!

BTW, why are there 21 of the 114 first degree listed attorney’s for JAC appointments with offices outside of Broward County. That seems to violate the administrative order for the registry requirement that the attorney have a principle or permanent office in Broward County. I imagine they are also getting appointments in their county as well. What will the new Public Defender or Clerk do about this, I ask. The BACDL couldn’t give a shit.

Is it good for the client when their spd has no office in Broward? Because they are poor they should be happy their miami lawyer will meet them a Dunkin?

Does anyone believe a miami lawyer doing a 45 minute commute each way is not going to do everything he can to try a case over doing a meet em and plea em to maximize profits?

Just check Broward judicial campaign contribution lists for the answer to your question. Broward judges and deep pocket campaign contributions make for chummy relationships that result in lucrative court appointments. Look no further most recently at Former Broward Judge Robinson.

Hear Gordon is finished. Lynch has already obtained major voting blocks out west and is securing the east side as well.
Lit’l Howie’s boy had better start looking for a new slide. This one looks worse for him every day.
Being associated with the rest of Howie’s sliders is gonna insure his defeat at the polls.

Maybe now after the Public Defender was brutally attacked by an inmate in court will the new sheriff once and for all get rid of the useless court bailiffs that provide ZERO security for anyone in the courtroom. These bailiffs are a complete waste of money and time, they are liability and a bad joke. They need to be replaced immediately with REAL sworn law enforcement officer’s that can handle the job. Maybe now after the latest fiasco and total failure of security from the useless bailiffs the sheriff will get rid of them.
