BACDL GULKIN NOMINATION TIME

Emails were sent this afternoon to BACDL members seeking nominations for 1.) The Harry Gulkin Award:

Every year, the BACDL honors a member of the Florida Bar who embodies integrity, gentility, and is a lawyer of the highest quality. Colleagues look to this lawyer not only as a mentor, but also as a friend. The person who is honored with the award raises the bar, and the bar is made better because that person is a member.

And for 2.) The Brian Reidy Award:

This award is given in recognition of a lawyer who represents Brian’s spirit of hard work in the courtroom and his lifetime of “giving back” in service of the community.

Nominations are due by April 7, and there is a BACDL meeting April 8, 2025. Members are encouraged to show up on the 8th to vote.

All nominations should be sent to Todd Onore, Scott Simmons, Maysun Salgan, and BACDL President John Hager

    Ewwiee! So exciting

Sure, I get the Reidy award, but looking at which attys get the Glupskin, looks like a Who’s Who re what atty can out brown nose the previous year’s winner.

    Lame.

      3

What did Reidy do but hold onto his job for dear life ? Is it a schmooze award or what ? That’s all he did to a lot of these worthless judges.

I don’t get why Schreiber and Finkelstein got it for being the Public Defender but Gordon Weekes doesn’t even after winning that terrible case. It seems……odd?

Because BACDL is known to be a group that hands out brown nosey trophies.

They only give the Glupskin to a BACDL member, even though MOST GOOD TRIAL LAWYERS AREN’T MEMBERS because good trial lawyers don’t have to depend on referral handouts.

No. The point is that while you losers make fun of decent lawyers and whine about Liz, the firm is about to collect approximately $300,000,000 in fees. And he has another one like it starting this summer. Giving him the award isn’t because he needs anything at all. It’s to show Broward criminal is a cesspool and career ender.

      1. 7

Criminal is a dead ender for those seeking big money, sure but so what. Look at the cowardly Big Law national firms scurrying away from President Bully. It’s in all the papers. What are they doing for democracy? How much money do they need anyway. How come the more they have the less they’re willing to fight back. Like those sycophant billionaires too.

        1. 3

          0

Sounds exactly like criminal actually. No money? Oh it’s best you plead guilty. Lots of money? Oh let’s get fifty continuances and then it’s best you plead guilty. Democracy my ass. The true criminal fighters have mostly left. And only three went to bat to argue against the devastation of the speedy trial rule. But plenty of whiny complainers here.

It’s always been a road to no where. That’s why most remain government gophers for life. Nobody want’s to work anymore, just coast. The lack of dedication has led to a rubber stamp social worker mentality with very few with the talent to excel beyond collecting a meager paycheck.

        1. 2

Money is not the definition of a good life! It’s so far down the list! As long as there’s gas in the yacht and Maybachs, and forage for the horses. Be content! Money shouldn’t define people!

It’s funny he’s got a law trophy named after him when all he ever won was a Clio for a Sea-Doo commercial he made on North Lake.

They’ve got to have fictional narrative to push. Bacdl stands for not much else but a mutual adoration group of flunkies.

Look at some of the big case lawyers they keep ignoring who fight like hell and deserve it:
    Grillo

    Cotrone
    Hoeg
    Maury Halperin
    Sam Halpern
    Dutko

Imho the voting rules are the problem. The active members are too young to have known anyone. The old guard that’s still involved (past winners and presidents) have too many grudges and agendas to be fair. My two cents. So the award’s a big joke now. Again my two cents.

        1. 2

          1

Maybe they can use some objective criteria then. In addition to this

Add something like must have at least three acquittals and/or dismissals of First Degree Murder cases and must have at least twenty felony trial not guilty verdicts.

Then those folks on that list above in addition to a few others like Keith Seltzer and Bill Cone would be the presumptive winners.

          1. 2

            0

It’s too political. All the recent winners seem to be BACDL insiders, and all the old ones are friends of MJS or elected officials. Not all, but most of the winners fit the two categories.

He was one of the best judges we had in state court criminal. You don’t have to agree but I always got a fair hearing in his courtroom. And Federalists believe fewer things should be crimes not more.

None of those listed above need an award as lame as bacdl’s Gulkin or Reidy award schmooz away to know that they are indeed some of the best criminal defense lawyers we have. They could care less than to receive a sycophant trophy awarded by a bunch of kiss asses.
Conversely, bacdl needs it to remind themselves just how useless and irrelevant they’ve become.

Like I give a crap about getting an award from BACDL. I dropped out a long time ago.
Isn’t there any more relevant news ?

  11. 1

Does anyone know if BACDL officially campaigns against bad judges? — For example, if an evil State-friendly judge runs for re-election, will BACDL openly back their opponent??

  12. 2

    0

Serious question, not being sarcastic. I’m thinking of joining. But I want to know do they kiss ass to judges or do they oppose bad judges?

    Do they have political power?

  13. 3

    0

Kiss asses subordinate to Broward judges. Its never had any political power, fully playing into the judge’s playbook. It lacks any proper leadership to take on any of the judicial overreach practiced by many judges and falls into the lap dog category for an organization professing a set of principles it doesn’t adhere to. Its more or less a social club.

Wasn’t that the basis of the split with Howie? That BACDL wouldn’t help him clean up the bench?

      1. 0

        0

Split was more likely because the judges had gone to bat for Howie to help him not become a convicted felon and then he quickly turned on them.

        1. 0

          0

Turned? Under this theory he’s supposed to ignore his oath of office and allow them to break the rules because they had supposedly helped him?

Let’s be real. If there had been a real defense bar there wouldn’t have been a need for an aggressive PD like Howard F. or the Jaab. Bacdl let all that crazy rotten shit go on forever.

        1. 1

          2

F Finkelstein. He was incorporated early on by establishment crooks for all his bluster. I give JAAB all the credit for dredging up and exposing all the rotten wood in this dumpster fire of so called Justice. The fact of the matter is, it has given a great stab to the corrupt pimps that got away with everything for years as they milked taxpayers for all they’re worth. Then they got exposed.
As far as BACDL — their efforts at anything don’t amount to a hill of shat on a hot day.

The way Judge Schiff melded his love of the law and baseball was an impressive feat, a la Herb Glukin with film. Did Herb ever write any books or treatises melding his two passions like Judge Schiff did? It’d be interesting to read, I think.

    1. 3

      0

Schiff’’s writing skills leave a little something to be desired. But of course after doing next to nothing for years as a judge he’s grown a little rusty.

My Pops was friends with Harry Glupin so one time I got to help out on a Sea-Doo commercial shoot he was doing. I remember it was a weekend and he was busy looking at his law files during the breaks in shooting (union mandated, so stupid-MaGA isn’t wrong about everything). The point is he was equally dedicated to both of his crafts but he was so busy he didn’t have time to write anything but scripts and legal briefs.

        1. 3

Stop posting Pad-o-ditz. Literally the whole courthouse hates you. Even your adult aged kid, is a dumber version of you. You are starting to resemble the giant “pen–” you carried through the courthouse. Like why would you burn everyone for this one defendant? It’s ridiculous. The VR of your client waiving a weapon. What’s your end game?

Really it should be every person in these perilous times who stands and defends the Constitution in the courts of We the People should be given the prestigious award.
There should also be a fix to the past winners list. The Cruz defense team as affixed on Bacdl website instead of the names of the lawyers is not appropriate.

Fine but they deserve to have all their names up there. That work surpassed anything ever done by anyone in Broward by a mile.

    1. 4

      0

It wasn’t because the defense team did such a great job anyway. No legal eagles in that laughable group of sappers. It just shows you how the jury made up of Broward Liberal Dimwits make up the overwhelming number of voters in this county.
Of course that idiot Judge Scherer didn’t help the situation much either.
They also punished the prosecution for stretching out the trial 5 times longer than it should have been. Talk about beating a dead horse 5 times over.
They bored the jury and everybody else to death. The entire trial was a dumpster fire. The only award the defense team should be recognized for is being the biggest bunch of mediocre lawyers the pathetic PD’s office could come up with.

The 4th DCA rarely writes opinions (aka the “4th PCA”).
But then, when they do, and the DCA has to reverse a murder conviction bc of, well, we have here: Katherine Farris v. State.

The opinion issued today exposing ASA Ruby Green’s deplorable behavior, this is some of the harshest language I’ve seen in any case law. Ever.

            Here are some highlights:

“The prosecutor attempted to rewrite history by saying: “That’s not what I said. I’m not introducing the video statement. I’m literally just introducing two of those things she said to the detective.”

            and this spank here:

“Continuing the pattern of lack of candor with the trial court, …”

This all happened bc Ruby was trying two defendants at the same time (Katherine Ferris, and codef Charles Alford). Alford is seen on video w distinctive tattoos shooting the victim – his conviction was Affirmed. But the State wanted to prosecute Katherine under a principal theory of: bc video shows her put the gun on the ground a few minutes before Alford picks it up and walks over to shoot the victim, etc. , well then she’s just as guilty.
Ok, maybe. But don’t tell the judge you aren’t introducing any statements from either def., and then proceed to say to the jury “Katherine said …”. Oh, and in your written reply to Judge Murphy, don’t omit stuff you told Judge Fein!

Ruby had previously told Judge Fein on several occasions that “no statements from either Def will be used at the trial” (in response to concerns about trying the two at the same time w the same jury). Judge Murphy ended up covering the trial for Fein, and she also told Murphy “no statements of either Def would be used”. Then in her opening, Ruby tells the jury about how “you will hear how Katherine said she was arguing w the victim”. That def’s murder conviction has now been Reversed.

Q: Why would she do this, just after saying several times “no statements of either will be used”? had Ruby been relying on a witness, someone who knew Katherine, to come in to trial and make an ID of her from the surveillance footage? And then that guy was no longer cooperating on the a.m. of trial? So, she goes w Plan B? Who knows.

But, by all accounts, it looks like the hope for a ” PCA from the DCA ” has backfired miserably here.

                1. 5

                  0

This is common conduct for the prosecutors in the homicide unit since HP took over. Started way back when Bradly was caught lying to the court and her administration. The win at all costs mentality is frightening and it’s refreshing to see that the Judges for the 4th DCA are taking serious notice of the scandalous dishonesty of this raunchy generation of prosecutors. It’s unfortunate that the 17th Judges are such pussies and care more about diplomacy than the law. Shame on you Broward Judges and Broward prosecutors.

Mr. Tucker P. Coltrane concurs on that Jeff Bloom nomination for the Gulkin.

He deserves it, and is rumored to be a little upset about not having been nominated: ‘haven’t I been a paying BACDL member long anough?’

Bloom apparently added that all of his “Hollywood connections” make him qualified, mistaking Harry Gulkin’s film career in “Hollywood” to mean Hollywood, Fla.

  19. 4

    0

To win the Gulpskin award, are you required to be an actual film producer as well as a defense attorney or is it enough if you posted some tic tok videos?

    1. 1

      0

A very good question. I know it’s been discussed at the most uppermost levels of BACDL without consensus. Technology has changed so rapidly. Is Instagram or Tik Tok “filmmaking” as originally conceptualized? The staff attorneys for BACDL are busily researching. But, all of these things, don’t come close to Golden Globe/Oscar winning quality art.

I found this photo of Harry online re the biopic made about him.

Glukman was richly rewarded with accolade after accolade for his film work. But he was a rocking lawyer too. Thats why it’s so great BACDL honors him. Because it’s like his film stuff overshadowed his massive legal achievements. Which were equally or even more important than the movies.

        1. 2

          0

Has anyone considered making a movie about Mr. Gulpsin’s life? It has it all–big time Hollywood glamor, exciting courtroom murder trials and the pathos of being a lowly County Court Judge. It would touch a lot of genres. Surely if not a major studio release then worrhy of a Netflix series?

      2. 2

After getting appointed as a judge for a term and then getting the boot from voters in his bid for a second, he used to survive on court appointments until his death.
He wasn’t very successful at making films either.
His wife Susan pushed a Gulkin Award as a way of a remembrance token than anything else.

Yep, here is another pic of old Harry Gulkin, at the premiere of his biopic “Red Dawn on Main Street”.

Definitely saw that guy in Judge Sheldon Shapiro’s courtroom accepting court-appointed cases.

I never watched the film, but the title suggests it might have to do w all of his legal battles at the courthouse?

      1. 2

All Harry ever got was court appointed cases. Perfect poster clown for BACDL since all they’re ever looking for is handouts.

Urban legend. Here’s how it started. Harry Gultkin was 2nd cousin’s to Jerry Stiller, Zoolander star Ben Stiller’s father.Harry had pictures in his office above Jimmy’s of a family reunion in the Catskills with them when Ben was still a boy.Of course with the Courthouse being an echo chamber for gossip, when Ben became famous it mutated into Gutklin directing all those silly comedies in addition to his own historical dramas that he was known for.

      1. 3

        0

I get it. Glumpkin was a Nepo Baby. Jerry Stiller got him into Hollywood. It figures. How does a Statie lawyer get to direct films otherwise.

        1. 0

          3

Harry was never in Hollywood nor did he direct or produce anything in the film industry. Dont know where you’re getting this chit. He was just an old fart that schleped cases from the old guard judges because they felt sorry for the guy because after he was appointed a judge and then lost his chance at sucking at the trough again when he ran to keep his seat at the suck-fest and lost big time.

          1. 5

            0

Very few knew of Harry’s filmmaking.
He kept it private,,wasn’t until he died in 2018 that the cover was blown.

Also, Harry was born in Canada. Few knew that about him.

He was a Canadian looking for deeper pockets in the US. After getting handed his walking papers by voters when he became a judge in Broward he snarfed off court appointments for the rest of his diminished career as a lawyer. Case closed.

Why are the rape crisis centers still being funded in Florida? This is a blatant waste of money, since rape kits can and are performed in emergency rooms all over the United States. This is a total waste of government funding.

  21. 5

    0

I had a trial in Pinellas County a few months ago, and some old hag, from one of the centers had a pointer and was going on and on pointing out all the parts of a vagina and how she swabbed it. You could tell it was making everyone in the courtroom very uncomfortable. No telling what the old woman was getting paid to be there. I’m pretty sure she thought she was a CSI twat swabber. Bottom line, who cares how she obtained the DNA, it’s the results we wanted. I honestly felt like throwing up.

    1. 1

Are you from DOGE or something?
Or is this a serious question?
Because if you’re one of those DOGE people recklessly firing necessary government employees that protect our national security who thinks ‘hey, we don’t need so many twat stabbers’ then I’m not going to engage.
However if it’s a serious question I do have some knowledge about twat swabbing.

  22. 1

It does seem odd that ER’s handle rape victims in every other city in the United States, but here in Florida we have to pay numerous high buck salaries, build the offices and pay for supplies? Why are our rape cases different than any other state? This has to be an unnecessary government expense.

Our founding fathers never envisioned government to become the biggest employer in the nation. We were founded as a republic. Most of these government Cheesers are completely unnecessary and should be fired immediately.
Then we have judges here in Broward that do next to nothing but dodge work and then cry we need more judges and Judicial raises because they’re underpaid ! The swamp can’t remain unseen and acknowledged when they’re looked at closely.
