I find it hypocritical of Mr. Finkelstein to send a letter to the Police Chiefs and then to do an editorial piece in the Sun Sentinel today calling for reform. It’s hypocritical because it’s been said he told his PDs in an email earlier this week that if they march on Friday, they do it as individuals and they do not represent the office. This was after Miami, Palm Beach and Tallahassee PD offices sponsored their own marches. Tallahassee even gave its employees an admin day off so they could do it during the day. Also rumor has it that his chiefs were told they could not attend the march. All types of Attorneys were present, PDs, ASAs, private civil and private criminal. The spot light should be on reform and what WE ALL must do to cause change, not just about what one man writes in his occasional letters to the judicial stakeholders. I have been told that he has not been in the office during the last year but a hand full of times. If you really want change, Why don’t you go to work every once in awhile and walk over to Tuter’s, Satz’s or Tony’s office and have a real conversation. instead of collecting 150k a year for only sending out letters or forwarding articles about yourself to your employees from your iPad at home.

I did my part. I knelt for eight minutes and forty-five seconds and tried not to cry from home.

Try and understand Jeff: Wiggle-room is trying to fit into a pair of pants and hoping they don’t split.
      Going without socks downright stinks.
I’m surprised you’re mommy hasn’t explained this to you.

But your idea about all cases absent body cams being thrown out, I agree with completely. Their duty is to protect and serve, not indiscriminately beat the crap out of people when they’re all hopped up on little wheeney steroids after having shoved half a dozen sugar donuts down their throats with coffee and then be spoiling for a fight !

Good work Jeff. We need more people like you to come up with real solutions as opposed to just more BS. The trick is to make it stick.

I think the cops will get the idea after a few of them are caught on tape as long as the same message gets across to some of our legal eagle Broward Judges.

Racism is an old recurring story in Broward society, its police departments, and in its Courts … Everybody knows it, and yet everybody turns their backs to the problem. ..
I haven’t forgotten the statue of Napoleon Broward that used to haunt the Halls of Justice in Broward.
As a matter of fact, it was Jaab, this site, that first objected to it’s presence and was instrumental in part in its eventual removal as I recall.
The statue of Napoleon Broward isn’t there anymore, but the Institutionalization of Racism still remains in our Courts and in the hearts of the ignorant who proliferate its cause.

Howard sent that letter 2 weeks too late and on the same day as the march. He sent the letter because he was not attending the BLM march and after he had been dragged on the blog for discouraging the lawyers in the office from marching. Howard (the elected PD of Broward) sent an office e mail regarding the march expressing more concern about the optics of public defender lawyers walking outside during a virus (because the office is closed) than the concern for the history of the killing and the disenfranchisement of blacks.
What Howard needs to do is return his salary back or give it all to his employees and write an apology to the lawyers in his office. They are so discouraged, disappointed, embarrassed to be publicly reminded that the emperor has no clothes. Shameful.

    1. 28

      2

Howard even had Weekes sign the letter as well because he knew he had already sacrificed his credibility. The PD is in disarray with no answers until Lynch takes over. It can’t happen soon enough.

Finkelstein really fell down on his duty this time. He should be ashamed. He blinked when he should have remained focused. He’s not the guy he likes to pretend he is.

Like anybody cares who the Scum Sentinel endorses. They have supported many Broward Judges repeatedly that have shown they are wholly unfit to sit on the bench and they continue to do so for political reasons having nothing to do with merit. I wouldn’t wipe my cat’s ass with that paper, let alone vote for any judge they support. They are a very large part of the problem.
And they wonder why they can’t sell any papers anymore.

Get out there and Vote Ruby Green for Public Defender!

    1. 22

      8

one thing most people in the office agree on is that Gordon needs to go.

Lynch may not be the best but he is on track to win this with convincing numbers. He knows so many people in Broward and luckily for him Ruby stayed in the race to attract some of the more racist voters who vote only on skin color.

So don’t waste your vote this year vote for Lynch to make sure Gordon goes

      1. 5

        0

I wouldnt worry much about Gordon being able to grab the brass ring. He’ll be listed last on the ballot and he’s known widely as a slacker put up by Finkelstein so he can keep his hands in the pie after he skates. His chances are slim to nil.

  8. 31

    1

Agree Gordon has shown us all for years that he can’t be the elected public defender. He skipped debates because something came up. He skipped the black lives matter march, because there were too many fish in the pond and he only likes to protest if he’s the only voice on the mic. He won’t share the stage with hundreds of other lawyers. He’s like Howard-all about himself. Gordon has been missing in action, campaigning and phoning it in for several years.
Retired judge Lynch has been endorsed by the Broward Police Benevolent Association. That should tell you he’s not the right candidate to head the public defenders office. The police want Lynch. What a shocker. The public defender is tasked with representing poor, mostly black and minority clients. Lynch is 70 years old. He’s the old guard, known for disproportionately sending blacks to prison when he was a judge. Suddenly he’s going to head an office of young lawyers and teach them how to represent poor people of color? His record suggests Otherwise.

How can “Lynch“ bring the change the office which was a sinking ship and is now in a tailspin needs? He can’t. Can a black person or minority even vote for a man named Lynch known for lynching blacks off to prison? I don’t think so. Retired judge Lynch has shown us who he Is and should remain retired, he is not the voice of the powerless and poor.
Green is the only reasonable choice.

    1. 6

      11

I agree. Too bad Gordon and Lynch are the only two viable choices now that Conway is running for judge.

(Ruby is a horrible idea: can’t manage her own finances; $348,000 student loan debt yet takes out a 40k car loan)

Have to grudgingly vote for Lynch as the least worst remaining optiin

      1. 25

        3

who are you to criticize Ruby for having student loan debt and OMG- a car loan. Are you debt free? Should she never buy a car while she pays off her student loans?

What about an candidate with a mortgage? Would they be unqualified also? Your logic is… illogical nonsense. Do you have some evidence that Ruby has defaulted on her loans? Or is she in fact demonstrating that she can handle credit responsibly?

Gordon is an empty suit. Lynch is a retired double dipper who wants to milk taxpayers for even more. His record on cases with people of color is terrible. He’s the cops choice for PD- that says it all.

Ruby – a real trial attorney – is the right choice and the right candidate to fix whats wrong with the PD. Too bad all the establishment types want to keep a good woman of color down.

        1. 11

          11

          348k in student loan debt?!!
No law school (even crappy “we let anyone in” Nova) is gonna cost $116,000/year !!

Proves Ruby makes 0 payments towards her debt (a debt taxpayers are subsidizing) yet goes out to get a VERY expensive car loan.

A responsible person would live within their means, and at least TRY to pay back their debt.

Not Ruby..she finna do it her way!

Yeah – you want to make this about race?! Ok, then if past black leaders are any indicator of how she will do:
          Brenda Snipes
          Brenda Forman
          Miriam Oliphant

      2. 38

        0

Ruby is unmistakably a female name in the year of women in office and will appear first on the ballot. Don’t count her out just yet.

Lynch is a holdover from the corrupt days of Moron Ross and the Gang of Four, so he’s hardly a good choice, and he filed as payback for Finkelstein’s treatment of his son, now a Circuit Judge.
Besides, he’s got the worst taste in women, known for chasing after courthouse bimbos and used to be Sleazy Spechler’s best friend before he got trashed and was not allowed to enter the Broward Courthouse ever again by then Chief Judge Tobin for a blowout Spechler had with Judge Peggy Gehl.

Lynch has a dump truck of smelly baggage and won’t be the kind of change that’s needed for a Public Defender’s Office that’s been going down by the nose for a long time.

That brings us to GOrdon Weekes whose known by everyone to be Howard Finkelstein’s flunky whose never pulled his weight in terms of caseload or anything else for that matter except to provide as political cover for Finkelstein’s feigned face to the Black Community.
Both failed to support BLM recently so their true positions are more than transparent. They don’t really give a shit beyond what has now backfired in their respective faces.
It’s all been a show coming from two that have never really cared beyond a Carnival of Errors in Judgement that’s clearly shown it was just a charade from the beginning.

So, Ruby although she may not have much experience, is at least honest in her pursuit of fixing the broken wagon that’s become the PD’s office in Finkelstein’s long reign of Bull Crap.

After all, what was Howard Finkelstein before he became Public Defender except for a drug addict with a failed business model in private practice who has systematically run the PD into the ground ?
There’s plenty of people with long memories of the stunts perpetrated by Howard Finkelstein and we certainly don’t need the continuation of more of the same from Worthless Weekes.

Restore the integrity of a PD long lost. Vote Ruby and watch the change happen that’s needed and not more of the same ineffective one-liners from a narcissist that could never see passed his own self-interest.

Wife beaters need to stick together, that’s why I endorse Jacob Segal for judge. His background is not as soiled as mine was (I don’t think he was ever fired for incompetence and the courthouse community does not regard him as being insane), but I like his style! Run against minorities with sh*t names – it’s the Kappy way to get unprofessional and unqualified a-holes in power.

Lol ! He’ll fit right in with some of the other whacks sitting on the bench in Broward.
There should be a revolving civilian board of oversight who meets monthly to review behavior of judges here with removal and suspension power. Our taxes go to pay them to make assses of themselves if they even come to work two days a week. That would save the JQC and the FSC a lot of time with these jokers.

Ruby has debt. That’s a hilarious argument. Every judge and elected official except for the old money ones or those backed by the old money (or the police benevolent association) has debt. By your logic she bought a nice car when she was 30 and had loans (just like every law student) so Ruby can’t run an office with a large budget. You argue the girl that grew up poor and wanted something nice should not run an office.
A boss does not do every job at the company right? She’s not the boss and the accountant is she?
The office has Liz McHugh doing the finances and handling the budget. When Liz ran for clerk of Broward she said the budget crunch at the clerk’s office was a top reason for her viability to run the clerks office as she had dealt with a budget crunch at the PD office. Liz said “I would probably utilize some of the same techniques that I used here (the PD office) recently to deal with a $2 million cut, by reducing operational expenses and overhead.”

Newsflash: The PD Office operational expenses are handled by Liz. Good effort though to smear a black candidate running to represent poor Broward blacks and minorities by saying she’s not qualified because she’s poor and black.

Gordon Weekes is just that. Weak. He hasn’t been a viable option for the head public defender job in 10 years.
Lynch Analysis Shows Wide Racial Disparity in Florida Sentences.
Statistics show newly retired Broward Circuit Judge Thomas Lynch IV was one of the biggest outliers, sentencing blacks to much longer terms than whites.
Lynch is 70 years old and had his career. He retired as a judge that disproportionately sent blacks to prison. Now at 70 he’s a changed man? No. He’s the one police want to run the office. That says it all.
Voting Ruby Green is the only choice.

Now. Now. Tommy and Jay served a very good purpose when I was running the show before I got booted. Every good chief judge in Broward needs a few good henchmen to do the dirty work.

This AH and the judicial corruption he spawned reverberates thru to the Judicial Mentality that exists in Broward today.

You won’t catch me voting for Lynch because he participated in Ross Hogs’ Grimy Little Game of Thrones.

And what did it earn Ross in the end ? Heard he spends his days now picking thru dumpsters in Pompano.

He may have been originally talking about someone eelse but when he made that crack about NC and sweet potaoe pie, he was talking about

The defendant, an African American, Steven Cloud, who’s has since bonded out, lists his permanent address as 4344 Oak Forrester Dr. Charlotte North Carolina.

Ruby is the best choice because the office needs change. She isn’t Lynch and beholden to the police or a holdover from Ross et al. Lynch is not change. Gordon is Howard Jr.
@Mic drop= hubris much? You didn’t even advance a coherent argument.
348K in debt. Ok. To think that’s a lot means you are 1- trust fund kid and never had debt, 2-daddy’s money, 3- a product of legacy or nepotism.
4- You live with mom? Because to buy a house requires a $450+ mortgage in south Florida.
So which is it? Clueless and living at home or white privilege much?
Elected officials owe hundreds of thousands in debt. It’s called undergrad, law school, house, life debt.
Ever hear of Rick Scott? During his tenure at his hospital company (he was CEO) he defrauded Medicare and Medicaid. The company was required to pay 1.7 billion back in fines. The largest such settlement at the time.
He was our former governor and is NOW a member of Congress.
So 300k in school and house debt. Haha haha. Funny. Also, you failed to address that the elected BOSS doesn’t do the accounting. Liz McHugh does. Ruby picks her staff. They do the job they’re paid to do.
Experience Nonsense? Baby lawyer state attorneys have been appointed to the bench 3-4 times a year.
Florida’s next Supreme Court Judge has as much time as an attorney as Ruby and has never tried a case.

It must be exhausting to be such a hypocrite.
WE covered she’s 33 (MLK was 26 when he led the civil rights movement!), she’s poor, black, has debt.
It’s clear the police and the legacy, nepotism folks accustomed to the old cronies gang are not voting for her. But PD’s, office staff, rank and file and ANYONE THAT TRULY GIVES A CRAP ABOUT THE POOR AND “each shall stand equal” has 1 choice. Ruby.
What’s the next attack that she’s a woman?

The police are laughing. Citizen review is a joke unless some state laws are changed.
No Teeth. Police unions are a big part of the problem.
Broward, Dade, can’t get rid of them.

About four years ago we reported about a Dade cop named
    German Boscoe.

Broward had a similar problem with a BSO deputy and his dog. Think he still works there.

Listen, we have a lot of respect for police as long as they conduct themselves accordingly.

I have never owned a slave nor do I know anyone who has. Over 160 years ago over 700,000 mostly white men lost their lives In war to end slavery yet here we are today still talking about it. Black people in America has hit the economic lottery with spending generation after generation of sucking off the welfare tit. No other country in the world would funnel them the money that our country does, yet it’s never enough. I am sick and tired of black people never taking responsibility for their lives and constantly putting the blame on white people. Black men when you make a baby with a woman, man up and be a father and support your child. Black women when you have numerous babies by all different baby daddy’s realize you can’t feed them, stop thinking it’s the welfare (my tax dollars) responsibility to raise your children. We have put money in your communities but it’s never enough so maybe the country needs to cut off the funds and stop supporting generation after generation of hand outs.

Whose fault is it that your own people are commiting crime in your neighborhood? You have the ability to go to any school, church or store that we do. If a white person and a black applies for the same job the black will get it because they are a minority. I worked my ass off to fund my child’s college education all while his black friend was on a free ride.

We just had 8 years of a black president, there are black actors, actresses, athletes and the list goes on and on yet some of you can’t ever get out of the ghetto and off welfare, why is that? Here’s another idea, instead of thinking these same people are supporting your cause when they get on TV to show off, wonder why they aren’t stepping up and opening their check book to give you money. Don’t get impressed when one of them pay for your child’s funeral (a tax write off for them) plus they are gaining attention for themselves. Here’s another idea to stop racism for the police departments to try. When you get a call send white officers to white calls and black officers to black calls….BOOM racism over.

Just heard George Floyd’s family is going to sue MN… SURPRISE SURPRISE. A professional criminal that robed and threatened to kill a pregnant woman is finally a valued member of the family. Now they should pay back all the free legal fees he racked up his entire life. What a bunch of shit that a man that didn’t contribute anything to his family or society will now make them millions. The money should go to black communities to get them off of welfare.

What about paying the Welfare system back all the money they paid out for his 5 kids and baby mama’s?

Downright stupid and vacuous with a voice that would make scraping nails on a blackboard sound like Mendelssohn.
