BROWARD #1

The 17th Circuit’s COVID-19 Advisory webpage is being utilized more frequently, following the issuance of Administrative Order 2021-38-Temp. Here are the four most recent entries:

Does anyone see a pattern?

Will the judges, particularly Andy Siegel in Circuit Criminal Court, and most of the County Criminal judges, continue to push jury trials, as Broward County takes the tragic lead of being the hardest hit county in the hardest hit state?

Wait and see …

SS – Florida hospitalizations soar for another day, led by Broward County; 24,753 new daily cases break record:

Broward ranks first in the country for new hospital admissions over the last seven days through Aug. 10, with 1,800 confirmed COVID patients, a new U.S. Health Data report shows. The county with the next highest number of new admissions is Harris County, Texas, with 1,713 new admissions, followed by Miami-Dade County with 1,434 admissions.”

Gold Watch Time! – Long time ASA and Satz confidante John Countryman is retiring yet again. His resignation letter is below. If the signature looks familiar, it’s because you’ve seen it on loads and loads of aggressively charged Informations since Harold Pryor took office. In any event, we’ll wish John congratulations! on his second retirement from the SAO, and look forward to Pryor’s continuing criminal justice reforms in the Case Filing Unit and elsewhere …

Dear Harold. A far cry from ‘Dear Mr Satz’. Hey Harold just so you know we are all tired of seeing Satz still around.

Wait ’til he’s plastered all over the national news for weeks on end. The never ending trial that won’t start for another few years.

All of you bitched, moaned, and groaned to open the courthouse for months on this blog. Now the same anonymous complainers, whine and moan that the courthouse needs to be closed.
I was against the vaccine before I was for it, defund the police-don’t defund the police, critical race theory-no critical race theory.
Make up your mind people, the sky is falling, I’m gonna be in bankruptcy one minute, next minute no trials, no courthouse, smh

Or they could stop being scared stiff of Sheriff Tony and order him to have 25 IC Zoom links up and running tomorrow and have every single Judge cross certified to Circuit/County and working from 9-5 on those very same links resolving absolutely everything in the jails that doesn’t require an evidentiary hearing (unless the parties agree to evidentiary hearings, then do those too). Stop being afraid of Tony, of the SAO with their liability shifting lousy offers, and of losing votes for Chief Judge by making the Judges work all day long every day under less than ideal circumstances. And if jury trials are a must, people that want those can ask for them by agreement and if the Supremes are so serious about jury trials LET THERE BE SPEEDY TRIAL DEMANDS.

True dat. They have to keep it down to an hour or two a day. So as to make it like they earn the same an hour as a decent lawyer. Instead of the $50 per hour they would be getting for a full day’s work.

Tuter should join a bowling league and step aside as chief judge. He’s been totally useless as a leader.

    Hey Countryman:
Now you can go home and abuse your wife like you have done to the secretaries in the office for 30+ years. Go fuck yourself! Don’t think one person will shed a tear when you leave! We are going to throw a party 🎉

Perhaps you should get your head out of your rectal cavity, man up and not hide without who you are. John may not have always been correct, but he was doing his best with what he had in making filing decisions and other matters. Should you wish to discuss matters further name the time and the place and bring a second. SAO5

Several in our department either have underlying health issues or our spouses have them. The virus is spreading throughout the courthouse including our department and we are told it’s business as usual with no options.

Just get the vaccine and according to the CDC you will be fine. After all the virus is spreading due to the unvaccinated people. I guess the people that are getting Covid after taking the vaccine must have gotten a bad dose? Let’s face it if the majority of people have gotten the vaccine and it truly is working then the cases should be going down in numbers.

      1. 1

        1

Completely wrong. The numbers are EXACTLY where they should be.
CDC said the vaccines were about 85-90 percent effective.
The hospitals are saying that 90 percent of those admitted with covid were not vaccinated and about 10 percent were vaccinated.
Sounds to us the vaccine works and the predicted effectiveness is right on the mark.

        1. 0

          2

          PS
You’re also wrong about the majority of people being vaccinated.
Look at the numbers by states and compare to hospital admissions.

        2. 7

          1

70% of the nation has had at least one of the vaccines and the numbers are still climbing so how can you say the vaccine is working? It has nothing to do with how many people being admitted to the hospital. If it’s 85 to 9o% effective and 70% has been vaccinated common sense should tell you it is not working. I’m impressed that you knew 90 and 10 make a 100 though…who says lawyers are stupid?

          1. 4

            0

99% of people dying are unvaccinated. Also only small % of hospitalizations are unvaccinated.

That’s what the problem was with that whole gang of anachronisms. They had no idea of the destruction they were wielding over the last 40 years. Anyplace else but the Broward backwater in the Banana Republic of Florida would have booted them decades ago. But Farmer Mike and his condo commandos and his succubus Scum Sentinel kept it going as long as they could. No 4th Estate, no justice. Things are finally changing. And with African-American representation in high political office the new reality the Scum Sentinel will be forced to be a newspaper for all citizens.

    Date: Aug.12, 2021

It is with deep sadness and grief that Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony and the men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office mourn the passing of Edwin Sanchez, 61, a court bailiff with BSO. Sanchez died on August 6 while hospitalized suffering from COVID-19. The official cause of death will be determined by hospital medical staff.

“We mourn the loss of a seasoned and dedicated employee of the Court Services District that will be sorely missed,” said his supervisor Tom Wolf.

Sanchez, a New York native, was born in Brooklyn. He later moved to Florida where he received his high school diploma from the State of Florida in 1980. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps for 23 years. He made a strong impression on his lieutenant colonel, D.J. Reintjes, who wrote for his BSO application. “He is a man of character and value. He has volunteered for dangerous duty in Provide Promise, Deny Flight, Croatia and NATO. He is an outstanding Marine who has done his job with pride and to perfection.”

BSO hired Sanchez in 2000 as a court deputy working at Court Services District. He would assist judges in processing and managing court proceedings in an orderly fashion; answer questions from the public and the judge; maintain contact with counsel during deliberation and advise the jury clerk about case requirements and jury needs. He went on to become a court bailiff and recently celebrated 20 years of service with BSO. “We lost a member of our BSO family. Edwin was a great employee who took pride in his position. He will be sorely missed,” said Captain Ozzy Tianga from BSO Court Services District.

His supervisors described him as “dependable” and “cooperative,” who was willing to
“assist coworkers.” “He loved his country as a member of the armed forces and a dedicated employee of the Broward Sheriff’s Office and Court Bailiff Unit. Your memory will remain in our hearts forever,” said co-worker Sergeant Alphonso Bonaby.

Sanchez is survived by family and friends. Funeral arrangements are being handled by T.M. Ralph Funeral Homes in Plantation.

SOME SAY THERE IS NOT ENOUGH AIR MOVEMENT IN THE BROWARD COUNTY COURTHOUSE TO SERVE AS A DETERRENT TO TRANSMITTAL OF AIRBORNE PATHOGENS

THIS POTENTIAL PROBLEM COULD BE SOVLED BY ADDING ADDITIONAL EXHAUST FANS VENTING TO THE OUTSIDE

Why haven’t I heard Howie’s name mentioned for the fancy courtroom dedication plaque? He’s made more of a name for himself and a bigger contribution to this community than anyone else in courthouse circles. Why would they consider someone nobody has heard of like Tennessean Judge Tuter but not Howie who’s been fighting for Broward County since the 1960’s??

I don’t see anything wrong with honoring prople for lifetime achievement. But to change the rules is a big step. Indeed. A slippery slope. To do so should only occur in the rarest of occasions. Like for Congressman Hastings. Who had limited time on earth when he was awarded naming privileges. He had no contemporary in the legal profession. Since spoken of now is naming for a living jurist. Hastings transcended the mere confines of being one of literally millions of jurists over the course of US history. If this Tuter gentlemen were to be awarded then where would it stop? Would every administrator or clerk be entitled? So sorry. But this is not appropriate for government to consider when there are outstanding citizens involved in civic life serving at every level. Most of them serving not in hopes or reward either. This is not appropriate. Not in the slightest. I am disgusted the County is considering this. In fact.

How about finding an old Little League trophy at a yard sale and repurposing it for Tuter? Or give him the Harvey Gluckman Bacdl trophy. For crying out loud, just keep his name off anything people will see until he distinguishes himself.

THE QUESTION THAT REMAINS IS JUST WHAT THIS SLIDER HAS ACTUALLY CONTRIBUTED TO IMPROVING A JUDICIAL CIRCUIT IN TURMOIL BESIDES TRYING AT EVERY TURN TO HONOR HIMSELF
OUR CIRCUIT DESERVES BETTER THAN A CHIEF JUDGE HOPPED UP ON HIMSELF

Chief Judge Weinstein’s name is on the side of the Courthouse on a bronze placard (with the Commissioners’ names). Jack probably just wants a little something something for himself. It’s weird that a public servant might feel that way, but understandable given all humans have egos.

At least Trump knew how to keep military troops in Afghanistan. Thousands of soldiers got killed and wounded only to now watch Feeble Joe make a total fuck up of the troop withdrawal. I’m left wondering how all those soldiers and their families feel about what the damn fool has done? His son was not smart or man enough to ever serve his country. By the way how much are you paying for gas now and Covid is at an all time high. So no I don’t want to compare because Biden is going to go down as the worse president this country has ever seen.
