BROWARD JUDICIAL SURVEY II

It’s been a long time since the Florida Bar or Broward Bar Association (BCBA) issued a judicial poll for the 17th Circuit.  In fact, the only ones found online are this one from 2002  by the Bar, and this one from 2008  by BCBA.  Rumor has it judges don’t like being rated, which is reason enough for JAABLOG to pick up the ball and run.

So here’s the deal.  Judges have been broken up by division assignments, and rank (county or circuit).  Larger divisions, like criminal, are subdivided by floor, so as not to overwhelm the voting public.  Groups of judges will go out every so often for rating, again so as not to overload those who care to share an opinion.  Votes will be cast in the form of your comments, and preserved online for anyone in the future searching for a Broward judicial poll or survey.

Ours is a lot less scientific than theirs, but much more than checking a box.  As previously stated, it’s just your comments, which means you can be as detailed as desired.  Topic areas to consider are Intelligence Level, Integrity/Ethics, Demeanor & Temperament, Work Ethic, Efficiency & Office Management, and for circuit judges, Qualifications For Chief Judge
.  Check out the BCBA’s 2008 categories for a more exhaustive list of criteria, or make up your own.  Anything you have to add is relevant, and the public has a right to know.

Judges rated thus far:

Ilona Holmes, Lisa Porter, Raag Singhal, Mike Rothschild & Matt Destry.

And now, currently up for consideration, it’s circuit criminal 5th floor

We will have a lot to say about McCrazy, stay tuned.

We used to be the firm that rocks…now we are the firm who sings

Barbara McCarthy is the most ill-tempered, unreasonable, and uninformed judge that we have had on the bench in a very long time. She doesn’t have good days, she just has some days where she is not as crazy as other days. Making matters worse is that she does not know the law, she is not very intelligent, and she always looks like she just sucked on a sour lemon. If not but for the above… she is a pretty good judge.

Gelin are you still in seventh grade what the fuk is all this dribble, get off your ass if you don’t like the way these judges perform…. get elected show them how its done. Lead by example, that goes for the rest of you deadbeats.

Gelin when was the last time you tried a significant case, inquiring minds would like to know.

First, and foremost, anonymous a/k/a “Children”: If I author an opinion or comment, I sign my name directly below that comment or opinion. You, conversely, hide behind a ridiculous moniker while you criticize the well-intended and conscientiously considered suggestion of a real gentleman.
    .
Bill Gelin is a real gentleman who cares enough about an issue to take affirmative measures to attempt to effectuate betterment of a situation. As Bill stated regarding his Judicial Survey, “The public has a right to know the opinions of JAABlog readers, whose posted comments will be preserved online for anyone searching in the future”.
    .
Bill has a sack – and has proven that he does – time and again. A big sack at that.

“Diamond Dave Dohner II” really needs to get a sack of his or her own; begin using his or her own name, rather than mine (sandwiching my name between the superlative [as I take it] “Diamond” and the suffix “II” in no way obviates any potential misapprehension that I am the actual author of your absurd rhetoric); refrain from plagiarizing my previously authored comments regarding other matters and inserting isolated, out of context portions of same into threads concerning entirely disparate issues; and, generally – if I failed to note this a moment ago – grow a sack.

P.S. Ironically, and in all likelihood what will prove to be one and only this one instance, I guess I have to agree with knucklehead “Diamond Dave Dohner II”‘s comment.

Here’s a thought: how about blocking the comments from those individuals who have to resort to using others’ names? Particularly when these losers insist upon quoting the previously authored comments of those persons whose identities they have “borrowed”? This is really just a corollary to my general “sack should be required of anyone wishing to author any comment for publication via this forum” thesis.

    Thanks,

    David B. Dohner

This Dohner fellow sounds like another Jack Thompson serial poster.

    Now, onto the judges:
COHEN: needs to be rotated out of the DV court – been in there too long & it is affecting his demeanor. Cohen is now ordering Defs. to Anger Mgmt if they want contact with victim while case is STILL PENDING!

BOBER: the best of this lot, which doesn’t say much.

McCARTHY: her close working relationship with EvaSolomos should earn Barbara an honorary paycheck from Satz.

BACKMAN: he’s all right (just don’t get on his bad side)

Mccarthy isn’t so bad once you figure out her rhythms. Do it her way and no one gets hurt.

    1. Judge Porter, good temperament, intelligent, knows the rules of evidence. Would make great Chief Judge.
    2. Judge Singhal, is the heart throb

Judge Bober gives time to work out cases and knows a mikey shatz case from a real case.

Grants motions too and rarely reversed!

Bober is the best example of a good lawyer challenging a lame incumbent. If more qualified lawyers took on lousy political appointments Broward could have an all star judiciary. Sadly mostly boobs with lots of free time run.

Bober you want to know the real truth. Well just sit any morning in the café with the breakfast crews and learn what everyone thinks. Rumor is if you want a favorable ruling in his division just bring on Kevin Kulik as co counsel. This has been a regular practice since Bober’s election. Are these favorable rulings coincidence? I don’t think so !! Mr. Kulik was not only Bober’s former treasurer but also represented him as private counsel during the Dijolas hearings. If this does not support the rumors just do a little research yourself. “Google” Bernard Bober and guess what pops up in the images. Ironically, of all the people who could pop up the only one that does is Kulik. Go figure. Tell me that does not support the rumors of favoritism. The guy is nothing more than a Public Defender in a robe. These practices raise some disturbing questions as to the validity of the rulings in his courtroom. That is depending who you are.

McCarthy always seems angry and about to go off on attorneys for no reason. She is really primed for the pissed-off condition all of the time. She is impossible to deal with and needs to be transferred out of criminal immediately if not sooner. You can never do an open plea in her courtroom. She is completely unreasonable and does not recognize the need for a spirited advocacy by a defense attorney. She needs an opponent next time she is up for re-election.

Been waiting for this group. What a laugh.
Backman aka Sticky Paulie is definitely the worst of the group for a myriad of reasons, including but not limited to his lack of knowledge of the law, temperament that is to be more associated to a mole in heat when it comes to feathering his own nest, the efficiency of a moron manager when it comes to docket call and trying a case, and the political in(stinks) of a self aggrandizing idiot. Have I left anything out?
And McCarthy: Now she’s a study in psychology; Haven’t had as much fun in front of that witless bimbo since Aleman sat on the bench.
Cohen? What’s there to say that hasn’t been said before: A small time politician that has a much better opinion of himself than anybody else has ever had.
Bober: A bit slow on the uptake but a gentleman to everybody that appears in front of him with a sense of moral obligation and work ethic that the rest of these scumbag broward judges could learn from if their own sense of entitlement wasn’t in the way of almost every ruling they make.
Not bad. One out of the other three Broward Judicial losers.
Too bad it isn’t the other way around, but Broward really has the worst set of judges in the State of Florida.

Something very wrong with McCarthy. Over does it big time because she’s unsure of her abilities. The rest of the time she’s just nasty. Try to stay out of there if I can.

Judge Cohen needs to let the lawyers sort out the order of cases being called. First come first serve. Going through the docket page by page like he’s Big Poppa working his way through the Passover Haggadah? Please. Lots of wasted time Man!

McCarthy is just not very smart. She should not be a judge. Instead of reason she uses imtimidation in her courtroom. Really Barbara, we aren’t allowed to talk to our clients because your hypersenstive ears can hear whispers in the jury box? Really? Give me a break. Don’t you remember when you were an attorney? Oh, you didn’t do criminal cases… I forgot, sorry.

Gotta love the list McCrazy gives out to defense lawyers right before closing of what you can’t discuss. Very reminiscent of Croin’sseven flirty words

Judge McCarhty is very nice. But…You can’t even look like you might speak in McCarthy’s courtroom. She’ll stop what she’s doing and tell you to go outside if you want to talk. Actually she’ll pretty much stop whatever is going on for any reason whatsoever. It could be an Arthur hrg, Motion to Suppress, if someone breathes heavy she’ll stop for 5 mins to address the no talking rules. It’s because she can’t focus! Then she’ll take a half hour break. Focus please. Listen to the folks at the podium. It’s almost funny if it weren’t such a waste of time. Her other ridiculous rule is no pleas on calendar call day. Excuse me? What? Don’t they teach in judge 101to take pleas at ALL times? No she resets it for a few days or a couple of weeks depending on how busy she thinks she’ll be. It makes no sense.

Buddy Nevs shore sounds like either a sunrise cop or a disgruntled DTU prosecutor. Absolutely hysterical to hear complaints about a judge who calls it down the middle. What’s the matter ,are you afraid that the sleaze ball operation, run by Sunrise PD with the endorsement of DTU, is about to be exposed to the light. Cock roaches always run from the light

Judge Cohen is fair and even handed. He is tough to be sure but he is hard equally on the state and defense. Get over it the little complaints. More are needed like Judge Cohen.

The above poster must be taking Ambien too. You can have Cohen! Backman just a regular sleezebag with no juice anymore and a change of diapers always in easy reach. Good thing we haven’t heard much from him since babyback pulled up stakes and ran away.
If that’s whose Weinstein is listening to, it’s no wonder he’s a do nothing chief judge with a donut addiction.
McCarthy is just another whack with bad tude and the desire to get attention with little or nothing to keep your attention.
Bober is a good judge who listens instead of wanting to hear himself talk about anything but the case he’s hearing.

  27. 0

Not the best line up of Broward judges. Bober’s the best of this group. Backman is still trying to clean up the oil slick left from Gardiner with the JQC while he keeps his head in the sand hoping none of it rubbed off.
2 minutes with McCarthy and you know you’ve landed in the wrong courtroom.

I guess Weinstein won’t appear on the poll because he doesn’t have a division or do anything from what I can tell. Now that would be interesting.

Backman the worst with the runner up McCarthy who’s completely out of it ! Both need an extended stay @ Belview. Both burnouts. Cohen and Bober both good except Cohen occasionally slips up. Guess he’s been at it too long.

Bober , like his mayor brother, rides the middle line. Similar in their approaches and processes. DIRECT AND FIRM, with manners well learned. Yet, favorites are easily spotted after history of observing relationships and decisions. OF ALL CHOICES THOUGH, BOBER RANKS HIGHEST.

  31. 1

Cohen’s a good judge. Backman cannot be trusted. McCarthy needs to be evaluated by 2 court appointed doctors, and Boober was never really a bright guy, nice guy though.

Anyone who has a complaint about Backman, Cohen and Bober is likely lazy and a hack because all of these judges know the law, are not afraid to grant motions when they are warranted, and do an excellent job balancing the interests of the community with the constitutional rights of the defendant.

In regard to Judge Mc Carthy, she does not care about justice. The only thing she cares about is whether everyone follows her rules. It has been quite a while now and she still doesn’t see the big picture. She should not be on the criminal bench. She is incompetent and arrogant.
