When are the idiots of the 17th Judicial Circuit going to learn that is does not matter how many thousands of hours, and millions of dollars of tax payer money you spend, you will not get a death sentence on the deranged teenager who killed so many people. Especially under the current reequirements of the law. Maybe some people will feel better but it isn’t going to happen not evern with an experienced judge. Just announce that you will sentence him to life and schedule a full week for everyone to be heard before the sentence is imposed. These millions of dollars could be put to better use. Does Mr. Satz need a bigger golden parachut or is he rich enoug. Judge Backman found this out after wasting millions on his last attempt to put a cop killer to death. A few lawyers made a lot of money and the killers got life sentences. Wise up 17th. Its not your money you are playing with.

In most places a trial of this magnitude would be assigned to the Chief Judge or the most senior and wise individual on the bench.
The Broward way is different. It lands on the desk of the daughter of the former boss of the Chief Judge who has most likely tried less cases than any Judge in the Criminal Courts
If it was initially randomly assigned it should have been taken from her and given to a Judge in the trial unit or ROC who routinely handle Murder cases.
Why wasn’t that done when one of the least experienced Judges got it?
It’s wasteful if it comes back.
However the real slap in the face is the inconsideration shown for the victim’s families.
The slightest chance of them being put through this again should have been avoided at all costs.

I’m afraid Chief’s more attuned to getting things named for himself than to the feelings of others.

Whatever the verdict it’s coming back. The case should have been tried and there would’ve been more error. Read the press stories thus far. The Judge has never done a Death Penalty case. Has she even tried a Homicide? Once it comes back Mike won’t be invited back. It won’t be a political hot potato for Pryor anymore. It’ll plead then.

Robert Jarvis, a professor at Nova Southeastern University’s law school, said he understands Scherer feels pressure to complete the trial, but speed cannot be a priority.

“Because Cruz admitted he’s the killer, much of the public doesn’t understand what there is to talk about and why the case is still going,” Jarvis said. “A more experienced judge would have realized that this was always going to be a very long process.”

Death penalty cases are the most highly scrutinized in the appellate process, and even the most experienced judges are not immune from making mistakes that get convictions overturned. Earlier this year, an appeals court overturned the conviction of Peter Avsenew, who was sentenced to death in 2017 after being found guilty of murdering a Wilton Manors couple. The judge in Avsenew’s case, Ilona Holmes (now retired), was one of the most experienced in the Broward Courthouse.

Open season out there. And lots of moves to be made. Tons of low hanging judicial fruit. If she’s smart Kashyi Ealry switches to open seat. Cohen has run too many times to lose. Let the games begin.

Prof. Robert Jarvis is an idiot. Why does the sun sentinel always make him the go to guy when there’s a legal matter in the news? He’s never ever tried a case in his life. He’s never been in the arena, he’s never argued a case for a client in a courtroom yet he’s the go to guy for all things law. He stands on the outside and thinks he knows what’s happening in the trenches.

Hey, sun sentinel how about getting some fresh ideas? How about finding someone to comment who actually knows what they are talking about, someone with courtroom experience. Jarvis can certainly comment on any issue of grading a law exam but that should be his limit. Please retire this guy. Broward needs a better “lawyer” to turn to. But maybe you guys at the sun sentinel like that he always comes down on the judges as doing the wrong thing. Well that certainly sells more papers/subscriptions.

Maybe it’s because lawyers will never be honest about judges because they….can’t. And also they won’t— Not publicly anyway. Too complicated. A law professor who doesn’t need to play nice with judges might be the only honest input.

Jarvis is a law professor. He teaches and has no idea what really happens in a courtroom day to day. That’s not a good source to educate the public. And he’s been wrong way too often.

The #1 JQC Judge Law School in Florida by a mile is where they get quotes on ethics and other issues.

Gotta hand it to her though. She’s sucked a lot of azz long and hard. She’s getting out before she’s popped out by the next bimbo.
