PD RACE UPDATE

*UPDATERichard Kaplan is not a contender for Public Defender …

The 2020 State Attorney race has people talking, and so does Public Defender.

Here’s the lay of the land, thus far:

Howard Finkelstein’s heir apparent Gordon Weekes is a filed candidate.  Jim Lewis is too.

Assistant Public Defender Ruby Green stated “no comment” when asked today to confirm or deny rumors that she was considering a run for the top spot.

PD alum George Reres said “it’s still a real possibility” in response to the same question.

Another PD alum, Josh Rydell, texted:

I am leaning in the direction of running for public defender after my service as Mayor of Coconut Creek concludes.”

Rydell reports his mayoral term ends this March, and his commissioner service in 2021.

Johnny Weekes debunked a rumor that he would be filing to help his friend and office mate Rydell in a name game ploy. J. Weekes stated and texted he will not be running for Public Defender.

Richard Kaplan, widely believed to be exploring further avenues to capitalize on his recent strong showing at the polls, has not gotten back to us yet as to whether or not he is also interested in becoming the Public Defender.

Please post a comment with any other rumored candidates …

Don’t bother running Josh. Not well liked.
Take your shit back to NJ

Rydell actually had on his site for a while a stupid saying like “I bring my New Jersey attitude to my practice”…what’s that mean?! Saying ‘Yo’ before every sentence?

Jim Lewis filed as a Dem too…so ballot will be crowded with like 4-5 Dem names.

Among those listed above, this one goes to Lewis or Reres or Ruby (not Gordo/Howie or to Joshu’Yo’ Rydell)

I think the writer meant Delaware. But still so true – would suck if rydell got the job and brought that “Yo ..hey” tude anywhere but his living room.

Someone who’s not a dick should run.

Wow, so then even sillier of him to put that dumb “I bring my NJ (or ‘Northeast’) attitude to the practice of law”

Sounds like the guy isn’t even from there!

(p.s. to those of us from So.Fla, it’s not seen as a ‘bonus’ to be from “Yo, hey paulie” or wherever the fuck up there…quite the opposite actually. Irritating people with ugly accents)

Reres would make a great Public Defender and would clean out what’s left of the top paid worthless do-nothings that have no cases and lean on everybody else, but I sincerely doubt he’s got the balls to run.

    ANYONE BUT LITL HOWIE’S PICK
HE’S RUINED THE OFFICE OF PUBLIC DEFENDER AND DRASTICALLY REDUCED THE QUALITY OF REPRESENTATION FOR OUR CLIENTS

When George says it’s a real possibility, you can bet it’s a no deal. And as we know, it’s all about the deal, right George ?

I will take Rydell or Ruby any day of the week. They are approachable and understand the reason for the job . I don’t understand why everybody is so involved in a race for 2020 when there’s important issues and judges up on this current balance, this blog really needs to focus on judge races

Glassman is the only lawyer around with the cajones to say it like it is: jail is a gross place.
There could be no better choice for this office.

      1. 6

        1

How does that take cohones- to say ‘I hate jail’?

Seriously, what has that guy done to distinguish himself aside from wear a bowtie for image?

No, someone needs to run who is liked and with a proven trial record.

        1. 3

          0

Has anyone else but Glassman taken on Big Corporate Jail? The jail industry could squash even giants with their big money lobby and influence. I don’t see anyone else but Glassman saying truth to power though. Jail is worse than having to ride in the right rear passenger seat from NYC back to New Haven following a night of drinking with the girls at Barnard after Bart O’Kavanaugh has called shotgun in a car with four windows that are broken and can’t be rolled up. Only Glassman says it out loud though. Everyone else says jail is ok, jail is part of life. Glassman hates jail and isn’t afraid to say it. He should run.

          1. 3

            0

What’s most embarrassing to Bart O’Kavanaugh:

            1. Allegations of sexual assault.
            2. Allegations of lying under oath.
            3. Outed as a late into life virgin.
            4. Outed as a total lightweight.

            The answer: #4.

            Ok. I will say it.

Jail is dirty. There is MRSA.

            Jail food is bad.

            Jail is dangerous. Fighting.

Going to the bathroom surrounded by others.

It stinks having freedom taken away.

            Ok. I hate jail too.

Am I now qualified to be elected to the Public Defender?

Lit’l Red got his wings clipped by Howie. Now he cuts hair at Sawgrass Mall for tips.

As far as Dingo Weekes, the guy is so stupid and lazy, no chance at all Squeaky makes it to the finish line.

      1. 5

Have you ever seen Weekes in court ? The guy shakes like he’s about to wet his pants. McNeil isn’t much better.

Rydell or Ruby are the best for the job. I hope they do run. Gordon…heir apparent? Such a shame. The time has come for Fink’s reign to end along with the debauchery and Gordon will do nothing but keep it up. Gordon would like to believe that he is the best for the job but…the community will beg to differ.

  7. 3

    8

Military Man, Family Man and the attorney who rides. A successful attorney in the office. Dale should run.

    1. 8

      2

Dale would be good, but he’s Howard’s boy and won’t throw in against Gordo.

Reres is just trying to find a paycheck after Hoho gave his contract to someone else.

Rydell would be better as SA

Kaplan is insane. Creepy loser need more than a jew name to win.

      Ruby would be interesting.

Gordo is toast. Fink only gets one vote. Gordo has no support.

Jim Lewis would be a good choice.

A big “nah” to Miller Rydell & Glassman

Need someone who worked for “The Bossman” Schreiber and remembers how a good, effective PD office can be – and a fun place to work! Gordo is Howie so he doesn’t count.

Someone who will make ALL attorneys have a caseload!

            1. 2

              0

And then came along a burnout one liner who has done more in his tenure to diminish the integrity of the PDs office so as to make it totally ineffective for the sake of keeping himself in the focus of the media and reduce attorneys to the level of social workers.

    1. 0

      1

Glassman should change his name to Gasman.
He can’t walk down the hall without wheezing. The campaign trail would end him.

  9. 10

    0

Gordon should not be PD. He is nothing but a HOWIE clone. Many talks with a lot of people who work at the PD’s office, they may laugh and talk to him, but won’t vote for him. That says something!

  10. 4

    0

Would vote for anyone who remembers what it’s like to have a caseload, with clients and how to try a case. That eliminates all the PD chiefs and supervisors. Bring back some integrity to the office and bosst morale.

    1. 3

      3

There’s always Rene. She can’t and won’t try a case but she’s a reasonably good administrator and shows to work.

  11. 7

    1

Clearly they had to bring him in to take the Cruz case to trial because Gordon and Melissa didn’t have the chops to try the case. If he is that good, he should be the next PD.

    1. 10

      0

Both the State and Public Defender are poorly mismanaged to the point homicide cases are handled by inexperienced lawyers not up to the task. This will end up creating egregious injustices to victims families and the accused and tens of millions of dollars in unnecessary costs to the tax rolls.

    2. 6

      0

Gordon and Melissa try a case ? Don’t make me laugh. Neither of them do anything but ride on somebody else’s coattails and then stab them in the back.

  12. 5

Too much invested in Gordon to have her cause a problem. She will get rewarded with something to go away. We know how it goes, easy job with double the pay. A job at a civil firm. She will sell out.

  13. 1

I think of all the people mentioned Ruby or Rydell would definitely win. I think Ruby would do it for the right reasons and knows what it means to be in the trenches with the attorneys. I saw her always standing beside her attorneys when s*** would hit the fan in court or if they just needed a helping hand. If she didn’t think anyone noticed…we did!

  14. 1

I will not be running for Public Defender. I will be running for Judge, State Attorney, Clerk of Court or Sheriff.

Vote Kaplan ensuring liberty and intoxicants for all. The underdog is a hungry dog and I am the rabid dog. Unlike Rydell the pretender, I am from New Jersey. Remember, you can beat your wife, but you can’t beat Richard Brian Kaplan.

Bobby D was a great PD all those years before he got elected to the bench in 92. He’s beat at least 2 or 3 challengers since then. Does a nice job on the campaign trail. Gairky popular anong voters. He’s still a PD at heart. Any chance he retires his judgeship, takes the DROP $$ and runs for PD?

      1. 2

        1

Totally disagree. He had plenty of spunk in the last campaign. He’s always been out there in the community, even when not running. He does a lot of civic stuff. But he is in his 60’s and probably wants to finish out this term and enjoy the golden years.

  16. 6

Why even discuss all these dinosaurs?

Is there not a single dynamic and qualified young visionary in Broward County with the courage and ambition necessary to lead Broward from the morass of racism and corruption that defines it?

    Where’s the beef?

  17. 5

    0

Nobody that’s got a successful practice wants to suck off the public trough. Only losers looking for handouts play the public service card because it represents a raise in pay. So you get the worst people running for public office.
The truth is obvious because it’s the same duffises you see over and over again looking to get their hands into the public pocket and suck at it as long as they can.

    1. 10

      0

I was in private practice after the AG fired me for dishonesty and professional negligence. But I showed them! I was able to rake in $800.00 per month! But I gave up the glamor of private practice to serve in the ORCC. I am willing to give up my $60k salary to serve as a judge, or maybe state attorney.

Vote KAPLAN – ensuring liberty and incompetence for all

  18. 6

Someone needs to go into that PD Office and just start fresh. Get rid of all of them. Never met a bunch of lazier public “servants” in my life. The Chiefs are too good to try cases. The leads barely show up…much less the major crimes people.

Fire them all and start fresh. The office is a joke. Say what you want about Schreiber but at least there was talent in that office when he did hiring. People who weren’t afraid to try a case…and could.

  19. 5

    2

Ruby Green should run! Especially, if she wants to see herself get crushed at the polls. Now that would be interesting to watch. Just saying.

You want change? It’s not her. You want a person with a backbone? It’s not her. You want someone with new insights and well rounded experience as a lawyer and a leader? Well, it’s not her.

She has never done one thing to distinguish herself as a leader or a lawyer. She follows the crowd at the pd’s, and gripes and complains likes the rest of them. She’s pompous, but has no reason to be. And then at times she’s meek and hides behind someone else to stand up for her. Even at BACDL she’s useless. She’s got very little to add to the association. She’s just another clog in the wheel.

She’s way too young and way too inexperienced to run for public office. She needs to go out and run a law firm, make her own money away from the public sector, to see what life is really all about and how to run an efficient and successful law firm. Isn’t the pd’s office a law firm, right Howard??? This real life “roll up your sleeves” experience might also make her a nicer and more well rounded person. She can be nasty, we’ve all seen it.

As she is now, she’d be another sore on the county.

Josh Rydell or Jim Lewis could very well be the breath of fresh air that’s needed. We’ll see.

  20. 2

    4

Ruby is worth the hype. She has done many things for and in the community. People who talk about her must don’t actually do things in the community themselves. All these other scoundrels don’t stand a chance against her! I wish the big boss Al Shcreiber would come back, but he’s not. Thus my vote goes to the Big Green! Wait, this is way too early to be discussing votes…this election is far away. Sooo everyone take your panties out of a bunch and focus on the now!

  21. 5

    0

Gordon Weekes is a sham! The PDs office will be in a better place without him. He has run that place into the ground and no one is happy with him. Hurry and get rid of him quick. Is Jim Lewis even running for real ?

  22. 1

    1

I agree, there does need to be a breath of fresh air, Gordon isn’t it! When Lewis, Rydell or Ruby wins…there you’ll have it!

  23. 3

    1

It’s laughable when I hear about all the experience needed to run a public office. It’s more like a bad joke really. By the state of the PDs office, a first year law student could do a better job than is being done now. It’s a mere shell of what it used to be.
The fact is that nobody really cares anymore because the cool aide’s worn off and Finkelstein is known for what he really is.
Any change of PD couldn’t possibly do any worse job. You know just how pathetic things are when Lewis is the best of the candidates.

  24. 7

    0

Ruby Green was all over some young leadership group talking about how great Mike Satz was. When confronted with the fact that he is a racist her response was that he wasn’t because he has a black girlfriend. She’s a sell out and will continue to be a sellout if she is elected to be public defender.

    1. 0

Is there proof of this? A video? Names of witnesses? If this is true then she needs an education on institutional bias and disproportionate impacts on minority offenders.

      MORONS WILL BE MORONS
      SHES A FLAKE
SHE DOESNT HAVE A CHANCE ANYWAY
SHES IN GOOD COMPANY WITHIN BACDL WHO DOESNT STAND FOR ANYTHING ANYWAY

    3. 2

      1

I think whomever this is, is mistaken.Though she isn’t my top pick, I can say that the leadership class she is apart of talks about undoing racism, appropriation, criminal justice reform and racial inequality and instutionalization. A part of the benefit of the class is to take on the issues head on and address the different views and opinions, along with playing devil’s advocate. Whoever wrote this could benefit from attending. The role sometimes leads to heated discussions. I still think Jim Lewis for PD.

  25. 3

    1

Why are people bringing up bacdl? What do they have to do with it? It seems like people have more strife with them than her. She is the biggest supporter of diversity. The news articles will support that and other organizations. People can take things out of context, who knows what happened. That office needs change, and I don’t know if she is it, but she is definitely the right person for the job. We know that the heir apparent is nothing but crap. So we all can agree on that! Now I will say that Josh Rydell is a good contender but he fits the mold of what the office has had already and so does Jim Lewis. I think about change and attitude and I see her face. I can tell you though if someone like Jeremy kroll throws his hat into the race, that’ll change my mind. Actually anyone that takes down Howard’s clone is good for that office. Now people on to the November elections.

    1. 9

      3

BACDL is a corrupt tool that ensures a steady stream of Black males for the prison industrial complex.
When was the last time BACDL took on a Prosecutor or Judge or policing policies?
Has BACDL ever run or supported a candidate against a poorly performing constitutional officer?
Has BACDL ever held a Chief Judge accountable to force change or bounce unsuitable Judges from Criminal?
Has BACDL ever stood up to a JNC or Governor for diversity against a dominantly White bench and against undeserving political hires?
Has BACDL ever created media campaigns to highlight corruption and racism within Broward?
BACDL is a group of cowardly sycophants existing solely to prop up Jim Crow and the status quo in exchange for favors and a seat at the pension table for individual members later on down the road and to award a brown nosey trophy once a year.
Blaming the Judges and the State for all the injustice is not fair. The BACDL is a big part of the problem too.

  29. 2

    11

So many of you have asked me to reconsider, I might change my mind and run for PD. A very weak field. Kaplan is higher on the ballot before lewis, rydell or weekes so I’ll win no matter who runs!

I would rather run for judge, since I already paid for the robe and the robe company won’t take returns. Publix didn’t refund me for the cake either.

Vote KAPLAN. Restore honor to whatever office I run for.

The Hatejail movement is growing. Bus benches, parking meters, tee shirts and hats. I saw Eric Holder wearing a hat at a MAGA rally in North Dakota. Jail is blecch, yuk, and p.u. Hallelujah.

    1. 0

      0

What is Hatejail’s position on Drug Farms? How about juvenile detention centers? How about State Mental Hospitals? Is it any locked facility that draws Hatejail’s ire, or just jail?

      1. 0

        0

I don’t know specifically, but I see Hatejail’s face on placards and bus benches. He seems like a thoughtful individual with a keen and inquisitive mind. His position on reforming the jail system seems genuine from his face and Hatejail souvenir tee shirts and hats, so I am confident he also has an interest in eliminating all locked facilities for those suffering from diseases and other disorders.

        1. 2

          0

Does the Hate Jail movement want to eliminate all prisons? Even in Sweden and Norway there are jails. I’m not throwing shade on the movement. But is it feasible? I have seen some of Glassman’s followers. They revere him with a religious fervor. It borders on a cult. That’s not meant negatively. He is a charismatic leader. But what is his solution to the fact some people are too violent to not spend at least some time in jail?

The Hatejail movement understands the need for some incarcerative punishment for serial recidivists. However it can be humane. Under Mahatma Glassman’s teachings jail can be humane and still serve its function. Instead of bologna, a cheese sandwich can be served from time to time. If there is leftover turkey off the frame from the judicial dining room, then the inmates could have that instead of the JA’s getting it each time. Instead of ammonia being used to suppress MRSA, the jail staff could use pleasant smelling lemon fresh Pledge. Father Glassman has never forgotten the indignity of having to relieve himself in the open during his Kibbutz summer, and doesn’t see why inmates should have to sacrifice their dignity in the same fashion without at least having the benefit of a care package of Charmin from back home. Hatejail is sweeping the nation and enjoying bipartisan support, and is indeed more than a catchy logo and website.

I have to admit I was on the fence about this hating jail thing. I always looked at both the pros and cons. I could never decide whether jail was a bad thing or just more of a really cheap hotel where I could rest up between drug binges and catch up with old friends. So anyway I just got out on Friday and I have to say it was rough. Maybe it’s because I’m in my 40’s now and I don’t bounce back like I used to, but the toothpaste made me nauseous, and the carb loaded food got me all backed up. I couldn’t sleep with all the other guys constantly fapping, and since I don’t do that too often anymore it really bugged me. I also couldn’t get close enough to the TV during the UM game and had to strain my eyes. Like I say, I think Mr. Glassman is right about hating jail. It stinks for sure.

I voted for Kappy, not because he’d make the best Broward judge, but because we couldn’t have any worse judges than we have already. At least this cretin would improve the situation for his first term or two.

        1. 17

          2

Don’t be so sure. We could do much worse. Kappy is an example of how elections can go very wrong. 1) He is completely clueless on the law. Not sure how he managed to pass the bar. 2) He rants and raves. Worst temperament you can imagine. 3) Actually insane.

If you don’t know him, consider yourself lucky. I can not imagine how horrible it would be to have this moron as a judge.

Richard Kaplan has been subject to bullshit rumors and false information. Richard has always been a loving and wonderful husband. He is one of the hardest and most dedicated attorneys to work at the Courthouse. The whole bullshit about the restraining order is a LIE. He has won multiple awards for his hard work and is one of the finest trial attorneys in town.
Obviously some loser has nothing to do but obsess over Richard.
Let me finish this by saying I am proud of Richard for holding his head up high-all the while scumbags spread their false and nasty rumors.

    1. 18

      1

A LIE you say? Kaplan should sue the Sun Sentinel for printing the “lie” and then quoting him admitting the “lie”.

Richard is a good person and a good man. Those who attack him are just weak minded people hiding behind “Anonymous” They probably smile and say hi to you in the hallways. Just keep smiling and saying hi losers cause you all don’t have the backbone to do anything else. Although entertaining and informative, this blog is also shit show for people who do not have the courage to run for office yet sit back and make pathetic attacks and can’t place a name.
Richard, I know it was tough going through this, however upsetting, you almost unseated a sitting judge who had the support of law enforcement and most of the courthouse. I urge you you not to worry about these pathetic anonymous attacks. You will have plenty of support in the future in your endeavors, believe me. Go Philly!

This is Jason. I did no such thing.

I just want to make sure I understand you right. I’m going to spend campaign or personal money promoting my opponent to Democrats just to try and get my opponent in trouble? Think about that for a minute.

Click to report rating 2/5/15 I met with Jason to review my case; I paid a portion of the retainer. The exact same day, I regretted my decision. His “paralegal” was supposed to email me copies of important documents “within the next 30 minutes”, after 4 hours of no response, I began to feel uneasy. I called and emailed Jason and the paralegal, Mery, on the exact same day that I signed the retainer to let them know that I’d changed my mind. I tried to reach them before they actively began to work on my case. Jason was a nightmare; he told me that he would only refund a portion of the retainer. We only had an hour consultation but he insisted that he’d done an extensive amount of work on my case. Keep in mind that we met on a federal holiday, how much could have been done when no government/ court offices were open? RID: 150006

INCUMBENT BROWARD JUDGES WILL FACE OPPOSITION IN THE FUTURE REPEATEDLY

Gordo, you are going to lose. Badly. Get out while you can still save face. Nadine and Kory won’t have to pretend to like you anymore after November, 2020.

So much for Lit’l Howie’s affirmative action try. The big guns politically speaking haven’t even emerged yet and Gordo as usual looks like a deer in the headlights already.

Who is this guy?? He’s now stalking honorable candidates to judicial positions at the polling locations. This guy Tom Lauder is a real loser. I hear he works for Michael Ahearn. These guys need to get a life and stop stalking good people. I’m told Tom Lauder makes money by collecting quarters from vending machines and failed the Bar exam many times. Total loser. Get a life!!

Shady palm cards? How about the fact that Red Broward, True Broward and Broward Beat are fake blogs to exclusively push Turd candidates? Claims to be a journalist, but he’s just another Turd dingleberry.

Aturd’s still hiding in his hole since Former Broward Judge Robinson thing went south.
Then again, his fellow scumbag Seiler isn’t around to throw him any slop either.
Aturd is washed up and hoarding cans of spam waiting for another sucker to come along.

Any wonder we’ve got the kind of pathetic judges we’ve got here in Broward ???
Between the scum on the bench and their greasy minions, citizens don’t stand a chance of getting quality judges in Broward.

JUST ONE OF MANY REASONS WHY BROWARD CONTINUES TO HAVE THE WORST PERFORMING JUDGES IN THE STATE

It’s apparently the reality that put Trump in office. America is sick of do nothing demos. Sort of like many of the judges here in Broward. They all need to be run against every time their term ends to insure the lazy bums don’t suck at the public trough forever.
It’s started and will increase as Broward judges face competition each time they have to run.
        It’s a good thing.

The very character of our country is on the ballot. Vote your conscience Tuesday. If you’ve had enough of activist judges, vote Republican and continue the momentum to flush out corrupt career judges.

So is the blog over? There hasn’t been a new post in more than a month despite multiple judicial races, courthouse drama, and more…..

That’s too bad. I guess it was a good dozen year run……

It must be a record. Broward judges have the propensity to fall off the wagon every three months or so. Bimbo judges perhaps a bit more often.
      Researchers are baffled.

Florida wins ! Republicans take the field. Unity and prosperity. Watch future Judicial Races in Broward. Activist Judges have no place on the Broward Bench.

The “activist” judges you want to run against are the ones who ran in elections to begin with. If they were appointed in the last 20 years, they were appointed by Republican Governors. Telling people to run against all Broward judges is a democrat mantra, not republican.

Has anyone even bothered to consider he could be in the hospital? heart attack, accident?

He should make some kind of statement if not.

Want to be a judge in Broward? Keep those toothbrushes and Pepsodent flowing to the condo commanders in return for block votes. Then milk it for all its worth.
