PRIMARY ELECTION 2014

Rosenthal v. McLawrence – it’s an easy win for Lynn Rosenthal, which everyone but the dreamers expected.  But as Jahra McLawrence points out, leadership involves much more than winning an election.

From McLawrence’s Facebook page:

I hope that more attorneys will stand up and challenge the status quo.  The unsuspecting community is depending on you to protect them from an unfair and unreasonable legal system.”

Truer words have never been said.

As far as Rosenthal is concerned, she’s not out of the woods just yet.  Her victory simply poses more questions.

For instance:

1.)  Will she face JQC prosecution for refusing drug testing following her DUI arrest, and for making public statements during the campaign which seem to contradict the BAT video?

2.) Will Peter Weinstein allow Rosenthal and other DUI refusnik judges to return to the Criminal Division, and will Mike Satz, Howard Finkelstein, and BACDL put up a fight?

3.)  Will the life-lessons inherent to any arrest, universal bad press, and the rigors of being challenged at the polls humble Rosenthal, thereby transforming her into a less controversial judge?  Or will the entire experience harden her already rigid outlook on the world of criminal justice?  Similarly, what effect, if any, will the embarrassment of having run a haphazard campaign and being psyched out of more than $160,000 in personal funds have on her judicial world view?

Definitely a lot more coming on this one …

Meet Judge Al Milian – good news out of Miami, as Al easily won a spot on the circuit bench.  Many remember him as a relentless Broward prosecutor, but he’s spent a lot longer since then defending with equal passion and zeal.  On a personal note, we couldn’t be happier.  When asked, Al would gladly co-counsel gratis on cases south of the border when deserving individuals with bright futures were facing incredible odds.  His local gravitas always got the job done, with one young man he helped us with now a successful engineer with the Chrysler Corporation in Detroit.  Al’s simply a great guy, and will make a great judge.  Well done!

In Palm Beach Jessica Ticktin has cleaned incumbent Diana Lewis’ clock.  Ticktin benefitted from the massive name recognition of her Dad Peter Ticktin’s heavily advertised eponymous law firm, not to mention Lewis’ reputation for being a little nasty demeanor-wise …

In St. Lucie – incumbent Phil Yacucci is still a judge, despite the now dormant website thetruthaboutyacucci.com.  This one got extremely heated, to the point police got involved following a confrontation between challenger and incumbent at the polls.  Watch the linked video to see how far this grudge match has gone …

In November – primary winner Rhoda Sokoloff will face off against Dennis Bailey.  Sokoloff, like judge Mardi Levey Cohen, may prove that repeated runs and sheer determination often pay off.  Wait and see.

Congratulations, Stacey! Stacey Schulman is now a circuit judge, fulfilling a life long dream.  She was a fair prosecutor, and is a family friend of the ever-reasonable Susan Lebow, so all indications point to a distinguished career on the bench.  On a personal note, judge Schulman sat on the bar grievance committee which disposed of the nonsensical, anti-American, anonymous bar complaints against your humble author, which took courage.  Congratulations are also due to Julie Shapiro Harris, who may now be considering a run to replace her current employer at the Clerk’s Office, Howard FormanThe third time may be the charm

Good for Broward Ian Richards easily won the primary.  He’ll face off against Claudia Robinson in November, with Jonathan Kasen eliminated after a severe trouncing.  We like Claudia, but never thought Ian deserved any of this, particularly since he’s a hard worker, and one of the few Blacks on the bench.  In any event, Broward voters get the credit, because a qualified minority candidate received the support he deserves …

Giant Killer John Contini replaces Katie McHugh in the role of David.  McHugh faced down damaged political powerhouse Ilene Lieberman to win her seat on the bench, and tonight Contini knocked out incumbent Steve Feren, whose long political career in Broward County has ended in similarly undistinguished style.  Broward voters once again get the credit, for seeing behind the curtain.  Feren didn’t make many friends during his brief tenure at the courthouse, but he did provide some amusing moments during the campaign, which we’ll be sure to highlight as Chief Judge election season nears …

THANKS FOR PLAYING!

I respectfully take exception to your insinuations here. Being a Judge IS the most stressful job in the State, and WE are equally responsible as anyone else for what happened here! Did you sue to set aside the new law where the legislature enabled the condo management to steal someone’s home without notifying them? If not, shut up. Be a man.

So what’s the stress. Being known to the public as an idiot, buying the election, not doing a full day let alone weeks worth of work, being miserable and insulting to attorneys and the public, being high at work. Oh I guess the stress is sitting there fat and lazy waiting for another free meal and your pension.

Sad to realize that The Jahra’s only chance at becoming judge was because the opponent (Rosenthal) got in trouble.

Sorry Jahrry, no pay raise for you. Voters knew better than to give a judgeship away to someone with so little experience, yet so full of himself. (the ‘separatist’ beliefs didn’t help much either)

When was the last time you checked into the real world. Whether Rosenthal got into trouble or not, her sitting as a circuit court judge in my county is an embarrassing. I pay taxes for her no thank you. That she was on her way to the bench when she got arrested makes this worse. Unfortunately her arresting officer probably got pressured to forget the case. But to say her opponent did not have enough experience is ridiculous . Her Money , entitlement & worlds away from real life does not make a repectful, fair Judge. Who knows how many times she was on the bench drugged out. Yes we all know her Xanax was redacted from her property list hey everyone knows. But to say Jahra’s life & law experience would not have made a better replacement makes you sound like a fool. If they have to keep her on the bench Weinstein should put her in the basement somewhere & stop embarrassing the tax payers.

First, I hate your new format. It is just horrible. Next is the important thing. No one that anyone in chronic relapse from drugs and alcohol should be on the bench. Trust me, I know? I am in recovery. Being an alcoholic/addict does not give you a free pass. There are consequences and responsibility for our actions. It is time to adopt a zero tolerance policy. One strike and off to a real rehab and fla and random testing or your out. It is a bad example and a slap in the face to every other judge, lawyer or constituent to allow anything less, I do know this from my own journey and it’s not judgmental or cruel it’s reality. Addicts/alcoholics have no business sitting in impaired judgment of others. We all make choices and have to live with consequences and excuse me but problems with illness, family or death are not a free pass to pick up. That is the total addict/alcoholic denial. It’s life and obviously some people can’t handle it. Florida do the right thing for once if that is possible and get these people off the bench and restore integrity to the system.

Only in Broward would a Judge with a DUI arrest during a campaign get reelected because the opponent was black with an ethnic name.

The people have spoken: Kasen is a joke. All the $ and all the fancy endorsements did not overcome the fact that he is an egotistical putz. Lori Parrish and Geoffrey Cone should go suck ass – their support doesn’t count for much anymore? Or maybe Kasen is just plain unelectable. 3rd in a three man race after all that – was it worth making yourself a public joke Mr. Kasen? Come back down to earth.

McLawrence had his last chance and blew it big time. Don’t know what he was thinking trying to appear so sanctimonious when running against a zany popping whack-job on the broward bench could have been such an easy win under circumstances even a novice could have seen staring him in the face when it landed right in his lap. Three times and he’s out of the game for good. Although I like his quote, he really fumbled this bad. He just didn’t get it. Running against these weener judges in broward requires playing the game to win like they do even when it takes getting your hands dirty. McLawrence is out of the deal for good.

Kasen never should have run against a black incumbent. Career suicide. Look at his donor list. All these big shots around town that were forced by Parrish to cut checks must be pretty embarrassed. How do you feel Mr. Schere? Mr. Dutko?

Admire J. Mclawrence for taking on this bimbo even if he lost. Broward being what it is, I’m surprised he got as many votes as he did. Every incumbent should be challenged every time they’re up.

Just shows you how out of touch the voters are where Rosenthal gets re-elected after the stunt she pulled. She’ll be an easy mark in the future for someone who knows how to run a campaign.

Bill, you somehow forgot to mention how Feld trounced Rickard, in a lopsided blowout. She won by the largest margin of any of the judicial races in the three counties. To the person who wrote in to the blog when you first announced Feld had opposition, arrogance is your name, a**hole, whoever you are, and it’s not Ellen baby, to you it’s Judge Ellen A Feld, baby!!

    Bill,
JAABLOG has never endorsed term limits for judges.

Yet you write that truer words have never been spoken regarding McLawrence’s Face Book quote that the criminal justice system is unfair because of a judicial status quo.

Using JAABLOG you attack judges you personally dislike and endorse judges you like.

    You are a hypocrite.

Don’t count on Mike taking a stand against the return of Refusing Rosie. He let a racist monster like Futch run wild and certainly won’t waste an ounce of air over a law breaker like Rosenthal coming back.

This wasn’t a name game. Jewish names lost and Judge Richards won. Jahra The Stiff doesn’t present well and he didn’t take advantage of the arrest.

Feren thought that the Larry Seidlin method of sitting on the bench when it suited him would still be permitted and his indecisiveness and invisibility didnt endear him to the Courthouse crowd. Sokoloff has as much business being a judge as Feren. She is simply not competent, doesnt know the law, and doesnt know what she doesnt know, and will never learn it. She’s very pleasant and nice person but then again Hitler was a good dancer. None of those qualities belong on the bench

Now that Reckless Rosenthal won the election we will see if the powers that be aka Howard, BACDL etc have the backbone to make sure she never hears another criminal case. She belongs in dependency or foreclosures. For those of you who believe that this experience will somehow make her more reasonable and fair to the accused its time to stop eating the funny white squares of paper with the cartoon characters. The experience only proved one thing to her honor if you are rich and powerful the rules don’t apply… Can you presume the accused innocent just like the Judge Rosenthal was presumed innocent. If Weinstein puts her back in criminal jury selection going to be a blast. And as to Mr. 540am don’t use my stage name because the Devil is all knowing.

Good job Bill. You’re comments were dead on. Keep up the good work.
Here’s a tip: keep an eye on Rosenthal’s JQC prosecutor. If all he/she does is admit a copy of her reckless driving conviction than he/she are not serious about Rosenthal’s proscution.
If the JQC is serious the focus should be how her driving on I-595 and on her way to courthouse could have killed someone; Her refusal to provide urine violating the law she swore to uphold; Ambien and Xanax together? For how long? Addicted? She was going to take the bench in that condition? Has she ever taken the bench in that condition before? Lots of questions, the good people of Broward County deserve truthful answer.
Rosenthal come clean, look what happened to Gardiner. It’s never the crime that gets them, it’s always the cover up.

What the Richards, Robinson, Kasen race showed me that good grass roots campaigning can beat the big $$$.

Robinson has been a fixture campaigning and was on Adele Berger’s Palm Card with no money.

Richards isn’t a shoe in. 57% of the vote was against him.

Wait til Robinson gets some money to get her message out. Richards is done.

How useless are the old guard endorsements?

The PBA is about 50/50 they spent a lot of time and money backing Gibbons. That was “their” race and they were soundly defeated.

They backed Mayersohn and Sahkovsky and Brunson. They backed Feren, Bailey, and Kasen.

    And they endorsed Perman.

Well they did get Shulman, Rosenthal, Crist, Hastings, Dubose, Keechl, and Sharief right…

    BTU didn’t fair much better.

    Lori Parish went 0fer

And the courthouse crowd went 0fer.

BAD NEWS FOR JAHRA. THIS OUGHT TO JUST ABOUT DO IT FOR HIS CAREER AS A BROWARD JUDGE COUNTY OR OTHERWIZE. JUST THE APPOINTMENT PROCESS IS OUT THE WINDOW NOW TOO. THRICE A LOSER. TOO BAD. It’s all about women voters…

Watch both Claudia Robinson & Rhoda Sokoloff will win simply because they are the women in a low information race in a general election.

Money don’t matter, endorsements don’t matter, even religion doesn’t matter so much….women vs. men= win for the ladies.

I think it’s more like Jahra McLawrence was out of his game from the beginning. If you saw him out on the campaign trail, he didn’t present well.
Like Kasen, they both had their problems getting any sort of message out and looked rather lost in their presentations.

Furthermore, they got out-played on the palm cards near the end, relying on others to do the things they should have been doing like building a real grass roots base initially and going from there.

If your going to work it, you better work it and not stand around acting like it’s going to get handed to you.

Neither had any real experience to build on from the start other than the same would-be petty judicial power brokers feeding them what they wanted to hear for purposes of their own, and both needed the job appearing somewhat desperate in their pursuit of it.

Suffice it to say that neither Kasen or McLawrence are judge material, don’t possess the qualities prerequisite other than what they both considered to be their prerogative, and didn’t appear to anyone to be anything other than two guys looking to get on the public dole like so many others out there.

And considering how bad their opponents are, that really doesn’t say much about either of them.

This is Broward Judicial Politics they were dealing with and neither of them seemed to know what they were up against from the get-go.

Suggest they both get a job in the collections field. Preferably one where they use the phone to make contact.

Fj McLawrence on the ballot makes this race much closer. Similar to john patrick contini, a nice goyim name. It is still cracker county, that’s why a Roshawn and jahara won’t get elected. Ask ken Gillespie or mike or Mary Robinson.

  39. 0

McLawrence should have won the race, but he didn’t do what was needed to be done. Did he even have a campaign manager.
First and foremost he should have run as FJ McLawrence. On election day, that would have earned him many more votes. Go grassroots. He should have gone sit down with Ian Richards and see how he does it, grassroots.
Dale Holness and others could have started an ECO with a smart truthful attack piece with quotes audio and video on Rosenthal’s reckless driving. Endorsements don’t win elections.
Stay away from white political clubs where he had no chance.
The white clubs he did go to show them you know their culture, Mazel tov. And last but not least the silent campaign not by the candidate but from the ECO that Rosenthal was a Governor Scott appointed right wing extremists. Had he done this he would now be a judge, Instead he got an emotional high and his ego boosted because he is David trying to beat Goliath.
Right now his judicial aspirations are looking dim. Oh well
As Journey sang, “Don’t Stop Believe ‘n……”

Why does everyone overlook a comparison of Rosenthal’s resume to McLawrence body of work. Rosenthal was a federal prosecutor and worked with the Anti-Trust Division of the Dept of Justice for 25 years. She was appointed as their representative to the Federal Sentencing Commission. She graduated at the top of her class from a noteworthy law school. She handled high-profile US cases. McLawrence is a nice guy who was a Broward PD and now has a general practice. Nothing to be ashamed of…but nowhere near what Rosenthal has done. Whine all you want about the reckless driving and how unfair life is. But at the end of the day, McLawrence doesn’t come remotely close to comparing to Rosenthal’s legal career. Perhaps someday McLawrence will build his resume to a level that warrants the his election…perhaps.

Make sure you vote for Richards so that Estrada-Robinson doesn’t get a judgeship. She’s the worst. She used to use her PBA position to call ticketing officers and get them to agree to forget what happened or forget their evidence or not show up in order to get traffic tickets dismissed against the family members of her PBA clients. Someone who will directly make an end run around the law by tampering with witnesses is not someone you want on the bench where the law is to be upheld.

    1. 0

      0

Do you have evidence of this? Or are you just speculating? If you do have evidence? Why did you wait 2 + years to say something? She hasn’t been at the PBA in over 2 years.

I dont know if its true or not, but I do know that if a cop was pissed off enough to write another cop or a cops family member, no call from a PBA attorney would keep him from putting the screws to the person he wrote the ticket to.

      1. 0

        0

Who would have thought that she’d be hypocritical enough to run for Judge after leaving the PBA? Guess she thought the skeletons in her closet wouldn’t come out. Why would she think that she could be a good judge upholding the law when she has spent her life breaking it? Drugs, stripper sex, evidence tampering, drunk driving…………the list is long. It’s probably because she wants the power, that’s enough to make her forget that she has a checkered past. Well, the past always catches up.

        1. 0

          0

Sounds like she’d be a great judge for county court (the people’s court).

You sure do have an ax to grind. What happened, would she not go out with you? Or was it some boy gave her the attention that you wanted?

You’re acting like a Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction.

          1. 0

            0

Sure, she’d fit in in Broward county, just another boozing-prescription pill popping-drunk driving judge who believes she’s above the law. Or…….she could do the correct thing and bow out so that Richards, who is an honest fair judge with a clean reputation, can keep his seat and keep diversity on the bench.

Why does it come down to sex with you? If its sex you want, then she’s all about it, seeing as she slept her way into her PBA job and slept around with the officers she met through her PBA job, and now gets it on with strippers so her husband can watch.

            1. 0

              0

You were the first to mention sex. I couldn’t care less about whom she slept with. I know her professionally and I think she’d make a great county court judge.

What’s the impressive part of the Reckless one’s resume. That resume seems to indicate she is a life long government employee, a prosecutor nothing more and nothing less. She had limitless resources at her disposal. That resume speaks to someone who has no life experience. Not surprisingly she remains a career prosecutor except now she gets to wear the robe. Clearly a biased jurist

Saying someone has great “life experience” is like selling a blind date by saying the lady has a “great personality”. Would you go into an interview for a high level job and say: Well sure I have an unimpressive resume…but look at all my “life experiences”. The response: Thank you sir…we’ll let you know. The receptionist will validate your parking ticket on the way out. ” Get real people…this is not a kumbia fire-side sing-along…it’s real life where real creditials actually mean something. Kasen is no better than McLawrence as far as experience and they saw right through him despite Dutko and Clowns big bad talk.
Now look at him: Just another pip-squeak looking to water at the trough, only this loser for him spells doom to any future political career for he couldn’t have looked any more stupid if he had a clowns suit on while he was on the campaign slog. How Kasen ever thought he was going to pull this one off is anyone’s guess, but I suspect when you’ve got Dottie Dutko telling you what you want to hear, it was easy for a pushover like Kasen.

  45. 0

    0

The rest of you whimps can shove it. At least Mclawrence and Kasen had the courage to take on incombents who have continually embarrassed themselves in the most un-judicial way imaginable. This is Broward County with some of the worst judges in the state. They should both be applauded for their efforts win or lose.

  46. 0

Looks like king maker Dutko and his boy got it handed it to them at the polls. Kasen came in last in a three way? Almost looks like it was a set up to keep the incumbent in office instead of a viable campaign. Laughable on so many levels. Their little shell game got lost in all the hoopla only to see it go down in flames with only enough votes to fill a MacDonald’s bag.

    1. 0

But they spent 100,000K doing it. 32k out of Kasen’s pocket. Say what you want but they weren’t spending that kind of money to get Richards reelected.

That’s like saying it takes a lot of courage to apply for a CEO position with a bachelor’s degree from Broward College and hoping that they won’t notice that the present CEO is a Harvard grad. Those “life experiences” would draw giggles in that case too. Writing out a check, making speeches for a few months, and slinging a truckload of mud takes neither courage nor character. At least Kasen had a better resume…McLawrence wasn’t even close. You get what you pay for in this life…there are no short-cuts.

Julie Harris or anyone else who is presently associated with that office should NEVER be considered for Clerk of Courts since we know how terribly inefficient that office is. The Clerks office needs someone who has management experience and a reputable finance and accounting background.

Kasen was picked to takeout Judge Ian Richards. They realized that the black vote might be a factor due to going against one the few black judges on the bench. So they recruited Cluadia Robinson to steal the black vote.
Kasen started campaigning about two years ago telling everyone that he is the airapairant. He is so brash a kinder word that he pissed off Robinson and she actually campaigned and took his votes thus pushing him out. This was known by this blog and other higher ups. Now the blog is saying they like Richards and Robinson.

      “airapairant”

I stared at this for literally 60 seconds before I figured out you’re stumbling to get to “heir apparent.”

Wow…. Is the tin foil hat too tight?

The last thing Kasen or Richards wanted was a female. Look at the Olga Levine race.

This race is following that same blueprint.

While some people are playing checkers, others are playing chess.

Robinson has a real chance to win.

Richards made enemies at the courthouse. Those enemies will probably back Robinson.

If she runs the “Richards’ Stealth Campaign” she wins.

Now there is some hubbub about challenging a black judge. Kasen drew first blood there. The fact is Robinson is a protected class as well.

Looks like Dutko and crew thought their boy Kasen would be a clear winner. That was their line. They were wrong. The old switcheroo with the last minute palm cards proved once again that you can lead cattle to water and make them drink it when it’s coolaide with some extra sugar that’s being given away. The west side voters still vote as a block when it’s they get a tooth brush or coffee mug out of the deal. LOL.
Sorry girls, but you missed the train. Kasen should insist Dutko and oily crew employ him now for all the late nights.

The WOMAN WHO STOLE MY HUSBAND is running for Broward County Judge – CLAUDIA ROBINSON.
Claudia Estrada Robinson slept with her clients and stole my husband (Officer Robby Robinson) when she was his attorney at the (PBA) Broward Police Benevolent Association. My husband (of 15+ years) and I had 4 young children. On Sept. 3, 2010 my husband filed for divorce and 6 MONTHS LATER Claudia Estrada DELIVERED HIS BABY. Thank god that woman got kicked out of PBA in 2012 the same year my husband married her.
The WOMAN WHO STOLE MY HUSBAND Claudia Estrada is now running for Broward County Court Judge as CLAUDIA ROBINSON. Let’s keep this trash off the bench. Don’t vote for #Robinson!!

(My husband and I were married for 15+ years with 4 children, see below and search for Robby Robinson)

Some one can’t steal your husband, he was looking to leave. If he left you with four kids and knocked up his attorney then be glad you are rid of his sorry ass. I doubt this was the first time he cheated on you. Just laugh at how she can never trust him knowing how she landed him and now she is the Mrs. with a kid, he will do the same to her one day. Who knows maybe she will get knocked up by another client.

After the beating Russell Thompson took after spending $150,000 of his own money with Ahearn-Aturd at the helm. I don’t think Judge Richards has anything to worry about.

Hell, I’m a retired curmudgeon with nothing better to do than hang out in the courtrooms and watch y’all. It’s what we do. Between that, and handball at the beach, and a trip to Lester’s in between, and other things youngens don’t get (Depends are AWESOME), that’s our day!

I’ve seen Mr. Kasen in action. What’s the beef? Unarmed trafficking of bow-ties by whitey? Involuntary Unauthorized Impersonation of Edward G. Robinson? He’s a good man and wouldn’t besmirch others. That, and he had the balls to run. Cajones. Stones.

Surely, stoning him, and other losing candidates, most definitively would invite others to try to their hat. And head. And spleen.

Like, a perfect cyber button for the blog — Crucifixion should be a link here — where we stick the losing candidates against robotic manatees, and endless loops of colloquies with a stuttering judge. With a Cross and superreligiousity.

“Guilt by association!” A most righteous McCarthysim mantra, here, in uber conservative Broward.

I too long for the days of Joe and you can help usher forward the days of cyber blacklisting. Where facts about the candidates are not actually… Facts. Who needs facts? Facts are dead.

      Sincerely,
      Abe Vigoda

ATurd still trying to fill his belly with the pennies of clueless idiots? If you’re stupid to believe anything that glut fly has to say, you deserve to get the shaft just like these doodies did. This weenies snail trail you can see a mile away. It’s when it begins to smell right away that you know you’ve hit paydirt.

Thought Aturd was selling sausage casings these days? Now that’s a real job for the Little Wheeny after he’s failed at influence peddling for the last time. He was always a really slow learner.
