When is Bill Gelin’s bar complaint coming for taking SEX-BATT cases for $500 and then withdrawing when he can’t force the guy into a plea.

The Palm Beach post alerted it’s readers about that story too. Here’s portion from a Tampa Bay Times editorial 12/22/15–
Here’s the story: Jamal Smith is charged with murder in Palm Beach County. A possible witness listed by prosecutors was the jailhouse snitch, a convicted murderer who had helped authorities build dozens of criminal cases. Smith’s lawyer, assistant public defender Elizabeth Ramsey, discovered months ago that the snitch had made recorded phone calls from the jail, bragging how his skills as a “jailhouse lawyer” had elicited 60 confessions. Ramsey included transcripts in a court motion to prohibit the snitch from testifying against her client. Prosecutors did not object.

The Palm Beach Post obtained transcripts as public records from the court file and published them online and in excerpts in its print edition. The newspaper informed readers about the snitch’s role in the legal system, including special treatment that included a private cellphone, a flat-screen television and a reduction of his own murder sentence. Yet Palm Beach Circuit Judge Jack Schramm Cox later agreed with the snitch’s attorney that recorded jailhouse calls are somehow legally private. The judge sealed the transcripts even though defense lawyers all over town had already gotten copies, and he ordered the Post to remove the transcripts of the snitch’s recorded calls and portions of its news story from its website. That was a digital age version of prior restraint — the government moving to block publishing information it considers harmful even though it already was online. The Post complied with the judge’s order and appealed to the 4th District Court of Appeal, which overturned Cox’s orders Tuesday.
Let’s not pretend the Sun Sentinel of Broward stands for something like informing its readers about anything or believes in free speech being attacked or investigating corruption.

The local paper on the state of affairs in the courthouse. The SAO. BSO. Judicial vacancies. General magistrate openings. Yves Laventure comes to mind here. He blew the lid off that secret vacancy that no one knew about. Then went in on how there haven’t been enough minority appointments. So that’s another topic covered here…Judicial appointments.
Nonetheless, this blog is just that. A blog. It’s not run by a person who’s job (actual source of income) it is to investigate and report the local news.
So all of the topics that are written about here he just scratches the surface on. Because that’s not his job.
Why am I disappointed with the local media?
    I like to read.
I enjoy when people speak truth to power.
I walk in these courtrooms and see the same abuse of power day in and day out and it sickens me!
    It’s easy to become desensitized.
    But I’m not desensitized.

I’m angry that the people charged with speaking truth to power in print are asleep at the wheel! And have been for 20 years!

Oh my god, Bill you are such a loser. Stop patting yourself on the back, you are not a reporter and no one cares. Your blog is nothing but trash and rumor mill nonsense.

What a joke. Almost as much of a joke as your law practice. $500 for a sex-batt? Really Bill??? Have some respect for your profession. And stop taking new law offenses while leaving the PD on the VOP to do all the actual work. Do nothing all talk nobody, A.K.A. Bill Gelin!

The better question is when was the last time he actually went to trial and prevailed. I bet you, no, I guarantee you that he doesn’t even have an office but instead works from his car that he parks in the jury parking and get his parking validated by the PD office.

Bill does have an office, use the court house anti rooms to collect monies from his clients and. Most he get at the Bailiffs if the anti rooms are lock. Get an office and pay rent Bill cheap bastard!

@ 9:55 Leave Bill alone. This Blog has brought much needed change to this county. Yves Laventure wouldn’t be GM if it wasn’t for this Blog. You sound like someone with too much time on your hands to blog instead of actually practicing real law.

Bill is a joke. He is an embarrassment to the profession. He’ll take ANY case for $500 – even a sex batt – and then withdraw when he can’t force the client to take a quick plea.

Check with the clerk of courts website to verify. Bill Gelin is a loser. The only one commenting with praise is Bill Gelin, cause even Lynn can’t stand him!

Why don’t you make some more weird comments about Mary Rudds stroke to see how many OTHER judges you can get recusals from. What trash you are!

I’ve gotta say that the weasel criticizing what JAAB has done over the years either is a twerp that hasn’t stayed in touch with the corruption that is endemic within the Broward County Court System, and which incidentally JAAB has so many times broken the story wide open to where the mainstream media couldn’t ignor it any longer, or is one of the countless oily patsys looking for a handout because they lack the energy, imagination, or smarts, not to mention the moral and ethical conscience to attempt to help clean up this sinkhole of hypocrisy, corruption and unbridled greed that is exhibited on almost a daily basis.
Try working a couple of years at legal aid you putz and maybe you’ll feel better about yourself! There are victims of crime and then there are victims of a corrupt system …

Wow Bill. Could you possible be any more full of yourself? Let’s give Bill Gelin a huge pat on the back!

In fact, let’s all strive to be more like Bill Gelin! Let’s all be true professionals and work out of our cars like Gelin does. Let’s all start taking ANY case for $500, but be sure to leave the PD on the VOP to do all the ACTUAL work.

It’s no wonder your own wife can’t stand you. You’re an embarrassment to Broward and our profession as a whole!

I don’t care what blogs or papers or tv say. I don’t care what Ron Ishoy says either. I want to hear from Michael Satz or at least John Gallagher who is in charge of the Drug Trafficking Unit. A woman’s career has been ended and her lawyer says she’s innocent. On the other end if the allegations enunciated by Eric Schwartzreich have an iota of truth then Florida has a right to know. Whatever’s going on it’s imperative for the truth to come out ASAP so she can be cleared or alternatively problems at the State can be reviewed by outside investigators and quickly shored up.

The truth often begets lies. Don’t let them get to you. Keep telling the truth. To the post about Satz and Gallagher, there’s a greater chance of pigs flying.

Let me get this straight. Bill Gelin considers himself a champion of minority inequities in the Broward legal community? So quick to pat himself on the back for getting Yves appointed.

But wasn’t it Bill Gelin who took it upon himself to attack the African American judiciary in Broward in the first place? Leveling attacks against Mary Rudd when she was in the hospital recovering from a stroke?! Really Bill?

If you’re such a champion of minority causes then why won’t half the black judges in Broward even hear your cases anymore?! You’re a real man of the people Gelin!!!

  11. 0

    0

There’s only 4 black judges in Broward, and you manage to alienate 2 of them! No wonder you’re trying to take credit for the Yves appointment. Must be trying to make amends for all that racial guilt you carry!

There’s a lot of vitriol here. Why isn’t there more about Ms. Downs? Why was she fired? If this is an injustice there should be some posts here about the facts and less attacks on the messenger?

    1. 0

      0

Actually, the messenger in this case was the Sun Sentinel. And the only person attacking them is Bill Gelin. Guess he’s just jealous of an actual news agency.

Bill didn’t break anything. He didn’t uncover any corruption. He didn’t begin any type of investigation. He linked to an article. Get off your high horse already, Bill. Figuring out how to connect a hyperlink does not make you a reporter.

    2. 0

      0

The reason there isn’t more about Ms Downs is because BILL DOESNT KNOW ANYTHING!

He overheard someone gossiping about Ginger and he posts it. That’s it. More information will be posted when the sun sentinel comes out with another article with more details.

      1. 0

Thank goodness. I thought Ginger Downs got fired and was being investigated by FDLE. Glad to know that’s not true. What a relief!

  13. 0

At least the Crime Lab isn’t “losing” drugs anymore. One fence post to fix at a time………………….

  14. 0

    0

Why fire someone if FDLE was investigating? Why is it CONTINUING to investigate? If the investigation is concluded, and termination warranted without charges, why on Earth would the investigation be ongoing? Why did Mr. Schwartzreich say she is accused of tipping off individuals with search warrants?

  15. 0

    0

“All this is unsubstantiated,” Schwartzreich said. “She’s being accused of somehow tipping off individuals with search warrants.”

Schwartreich said Downs will be vindicated in the investigation.

“She did not do anything to tip off or give any information about any search warrants or any ongoing investigations,” he said.

The state attorney’s office isn’t discussing the details of the case, saying only that it is an ongoing investigation.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is the lead agency in the investigation.

Isn’t Bill. I’ll repost an earlier post bc you guys can’t keep up.
Why didn’t the Sun sentinel investigate and know about the shutting down of the PBSO talk?
Why didn’t the SS investigate/ report the issue with the bailiffs?
Because as it’s been proven time and time again they report OLD NEWS. The SS reports news that other papers or blogs have already written about. Then they pretty much copy and paste.
    Laziness. Apathy. No b*lls.
Here’s other stories they’ve reported on AFTER jaablog, Bob Norman, Miami herald, Dan, or buddy:
-FDLE investigating the drug trafficking unit at SAO AND GINGER being escorted out of the Sao.
    – remember judging Ana? And the uncovering of the craziness of the state and judge during death penalty case?
-NBHD pandemonium/Zimmerman contract/suspension of Chairman by the governor. Exposed by SS? Nope.
-the Brady list and failures by state to disclose Brady for years? PD’s office was on top of that. Bill revealed it to everyone else and then in dead last again…SS. State still failing to disclose Brady. SS asleep at the wheel.
    – ever hear of Tampa bay times? They’ve won pulitzers (10?) for all sorts of reporting. Like abuse of the homeless. When the announcement was made regarding one of the Pulitzer Prizes they said …”this is what …journalists do report abuse.”
What? Really. Someone tell the SS. IMAGINE that… Actual discovery and reporting of abuse by the local paper.

This isn’t about Bill. But at least he’s doing something! Saying something. Also — He does regularly highlight the fact that there are so few minority judges. He was the one that not only posted the GM position but called Weinstein to request that the deadline be extended once it was revealed to the rest of the courthouse.

Wake the F**k up SS and the local media.
Stop sitting around kissing the state and BSO’s ass.
    Got journalists?

When drugs were missing from the crime lab Gallagher never said anything until the PD’s office revealed it. Then he denied it for several months. Then 2 crime lab employees retired. Then while the “investigation” was going on of Kelli McDonald she went on leave and never came back. She’s now gone. Did the SS CRACK THE STORY? No. Go look for the stories on the irregularities on the Broward county crime lab please. Seriously. Seems like a big deal right? I think drugs missing from the Broward sheriffs crime lab is a big deal.
Don’t you? 3 employees retired and or were let go because of it. But where’s the big story on it?!?! Where’s Kelli McDonald?
That’s how this Downs drug trafficking unit story will end. It’ll be swept under the rug without much hoopla. Just like all the other stories that should be told. Investigated. Stories about corruption and cover ups at BSO, SAO. They need to be told by real reporters. But aren’t because they won’t GET TO WORK!

Is ridiculous. So 2 years probation. Then a new term of probation then this violation =28 year sentence. The sentence tells you it must’ve been a poor, minority client. In a crappy car. Because if it wasn’t a poor, minority he’d have been sent home on community control to watch his smart tv.
28 years. Like he’s a worthless human being. Let’s just get rid of him for 28 years for a high speed joyride.
The Broward County courthouse hypocrisy is outrageous.

Bill broke the Ginger Downs story. Hours before the SS. And yet she had been escorted out by police days before. So SS who’s job it is to have its ears to the ground was asleep at the wheel. Again.
The story SS wrote in the paper later that afternoon AFTER THE BLOG about Downs firing was almost a copy and paste of what was already in the blog. They’ve now followed up and done a tad bit more reporting. But nothing really.
    No scoops. No real information.
BC the SS IS A JOKE.
I get that you may not like Bill. But don’t pretend he doesn’t know some of what’s going on in this courthouse…and share it.

It’s funny sometimes when lawyers tell clients to stfu, but they can’t heed their own advice.

This is Schwartzreich’s second high profile case and he just can’t keep his mouth shut on either one.

I bet anyone lunch he loses both cases. The Peraza case where he said his client would “Be acquited in a New York minute”..and the Downs case too where he blabs on and on about how “We can’t help who we fall in love with.”

Try your cases in court, not in the media.

    1. 0

      0

OK big shot, when was the last time YOU had a case in the media? Oh that’s right, the only time you get in the papers is when you’re commenting on OTHER people’s cases or on issues that don’t involve you. Shut up already Bill, it’s getting old.

    2. 0

      0

Trying cases in the media can be effective such as OJ Simpson wherein the Judge Ito bowed to public pressure in numerous rulings. However here I don’t believe it benefitted Ms. Downs to confirm that a mere rumor was in fact a formal accusation, specifically, you know, tipping on warrants. I could be wrong though.

The Sun Sentinel was long ago incorporated into the same corrupt political system that keeps those making the decisions in control of what they want to be leaked out and when, but especially how. It’s not paranoia, it’s the truth.
The Sun Sentinel is utterly worthless and lacks any real investigative reporters that aren’t Answerable to an editorial staff who’s real motives have been clear for quite some time, and it doesn’t include unbiased reporting. I have no respect for that so called newspaper newspaper nor the people in its employ who have allowed this to happen.

Speaking of corruption, what is the SA going to do about BSO tampering with the headphones that Jermain McBean was wearing? Answer, absolutely nothing.

Is the SA prosecuting Peraza going to really try and win this one or is he just going through the motions, kinda like the George Zimmerman prosecutor?

The SA investigators follow-up report is a sham. It says that there was no attempt to hide the earplugs. Really? This based on the fact that one witness gave him 2 pictures of McBean’s dead body with the earplugs on, and one paramedic said she saw earbuds on Mcbean when he was in the ambulance. That’s the entire rationale employed for determining that the earbuds were not tampered with. But, another witness gave him 7 pics of McBean laying on the ground without the earbuds present. So, what happened to the earbuds in between the time the first pics of him with the earbuds and the second pics of him without the earbuds? Both sets of pics were snapped before McBean was loaded into the ambulance.

Then you’ve got 5 paramedics who don’t work for BSO saying they never saw earplugs. But the one paramedic who now works for BSO says she saw earplugs. So, who gets to testify? The one paramedic who is now employed by BSO who says she saw earplugs, or the 5 paramedics who do not work for BSO who saw no earplugs? Which is more credible? 5 paramedics who saw no earbuds, or the one who says she did? And the one who says she did is employed by the defendant in the federal suit and has the same employer as the defendant in the manslaughter case. She has no credibility. 5 other paramedics did not see the same thing she says she saw, and she has ties to Peraza and Israel through her employment.

And of course, you have a plethora of BSO deputies on scene saying that they never saw earbuds. This after literally hovering over his dead body and checking for vitals. Are they blind or are they liars? I’m going to go with liars.

Did the SA investigator interview anyone at the hospital with respect to what they saw or any inventory they did of McBeans property before the bag containing his property was handed to BSO? No. So much for a thorough investigation.

Is the Peraza prosecution for real or will the jury be spoon fed only what the powers that be want them to know?

I’m sure the family’s civil attorney will prevail in the federal case. But how much gets done at the state manslaughter trial or even the purported FBI investigation is yet to be seen. But I’m telling ya folks, there was an attempt by BSO to hide those earplugs. It’s not hard to prove. That is if you really want to.

Say what u want to about this blog, but it’s gone a long way toward bringing out the filthy little schemes so many judges and other squirmers within the courthouse scene thought were going to go unnoticed until they were busted and it was finally picked up by the co- opted mainstream media ! It’s brought the once mighty low and leveled the playing field for minorities and other disenfranchised good people that before now have been shut out of the process thru the back room dirty politics of Broward Judicial schemers ! My hat goes off to all those that have made this possible. Keep up the good fight because the scum you’re up against don’t rest when it comes to lining their pockets and those of their cronies at public expense !

    Another cover-up

Detective Greenlaw’s Internal Affairs file also contained an investigative report by Captain Rick Maglione concluding that the incident was merely a “training issue.” Captain Maglione responded to ASA Di Pietro’s letter on July 12,2006 and thanked him for bringing the matter to his attention and advised that the detectives would participate in training. To suggest this was sufficient is laughable. This is not a matter oftraining, but of honesty. An officer DOES NOT have to be trained to know he CAN NOT lie- especially under oath.
