Today’s lunch time sojourn yielded 22 empty courtrooms and 14 courtrooms in use out of 36 checked in the old courthouse between 1:40 PM and 1:55 PM.  Of the courtrooms in use or about to be used, 3 were staffed by senior judges, and one was staffed by a circuit juvenile delinquency judge.  As always, North Wing courtrooms were not checked, since everyone knows the Broward prison machine is nearly always running full steam.  Satellite courtrooms were likewise not checked, although it’s a safe bet another bonanza of inefficiently managed resources and personnel would have been discovered if North, South, and West were monitored.

Even allowing for the slight possibility that a few of the desolate courtrooms might have been scheduled for late starts, the fact that only 14 out of 36 courtrooms were in use during peak hours on a Wednesday afternoon speaks volumes.  Critics are quick to point out that Peter Weinstein can’t physically stop his judges from behaving badly, but no one will argue that his administration wouldn’t last a day in the private sector with so many tax dollars going up in flames on a daily basis.  Once again it’s a leadership problem, and based on the 17th Circuit’s most recent request  to the Supreme Court for 6 additional  county judges, don’t expect anything to change soon …

    At least there’s a shiny new courthouse set to open soon. I bet it will be emptier than The Galleria Mall!!

    Bill, it’s not a leadership problem!! Don’t be ridiculous, its a total and complete LACK of leadership issue! Why should Weinstein give a rats ass if his “herd” is either off grazing in some unknown and far-away fields or actually doing their job and what they are handsomely and sometimes perversely “paid” to do, for example, as with the double-dipping machine known as the ‘Drop Program………..on the other hand, as a sole practicioner, trying cases for a few decades, I can honestly say that the empty courthouse and non-existent “work-ethic” , so representative of the Weinstein Herd, is a welcome break, from the stress that often comes with efficiency. I guess, “thanks all you lazy bastards, for making my life a litttle easier these days! ”

    Judges afternoons are very full, going to junior league and hadassah meetings to collect plaques from old ladies who tell them they’re great and not losers who couldn’t make more than 80k in private practice.

    Talk about empty courtrooms…go to the Satellites on Fridays…they have as many judges their as Mars does people.

    I’ve always wondered why Jill Levy is not a topic of discussion. She puts half a mill in a bank account every six years, gets no opposition, and proceeds to no show for her job. Although I can’t see blaming the chief for some ASA getting busted, I don’t understand why she is kept out there and protected. She makes Diaz look like a workaholic.

    I finished up my hearing early this afternoon and since it was Friday I felt like getting high. The only problem was there weren’t any Judges or ASAs around so I just went home instead.

    Judge Williams never starts his docket before 9:30. And once he is there he is screaming about everywhere else he has to be. Move his docket.

    Destry started court at 10:00 on Friday.

    Both courtrooms were packed with lawyers, staff, defendants and victims.
